just got me a 9800 XT for 232.50...hehe, neat ;) Well, it's 9800 pro 256 mb, but it's teh same gpu core and same ram as the real xt (even identical pcb), all it needs is some cooling and a bios flash ;)

Am I going to need a power cable or anything like that for this? I haven't followed video cards in forever -- I remember reading that you needed a spare molex or something for this, but I dunno. :p

you know, i have no understanding why you copied and pasted the exact same message here and at fatwallet, the reason why i come here is to try and get away from fatwallet folk... besides its not even a relevant comment... plus you have no idea if it will even o/c...

oh well...

Not really, cause the card has an in-out adaptor, just plugs in-line to an existing connection.

Got one. Can anyone recommend the best way to stress test the card to make sure it's going to be alright before the 15 days is up?

How about an overclock?

Aquamark3 and 3DMark03 for several loops...Aquamark3 will show artifacting almost immediately if there is any problem.

Jump up and down on it?
:D

I think Anandtech and Tomshardware post the software they use to stress a card.

I gotta dud :( Oh well I'm gonna have to RMA it today. Talk about artifacts.......half the screen checkerboards almost immediately on 3DMARK.

btw. I looked for a bios to try and flash a fresh bios on it but couldn't find one for the ati radeon 9800 128MB with the Hynix 2.8 memory chips. I couldn't even find a reference to one with those chips. It makes me wonder if I even actually received the 9800 pro in the first place. The hs/fan also had a lot of play as if someone had removed it and tried applying different thermal compound, but I couldn't really tell.

Oh well....nothing ventured, nothing gained. It's gonna cost me all of about $3.00 to ship it back....that is one more bum on the freeway onramp who will not sell flowers this week. :)

This is a HOT deal because the reason most of these are refurbed is that the fans on them sieze up and burn up the processor. I had this happen to this exact card. fan was siezed solid. I couldnt determine what the problem was untill I smelled really hot plastic.

If you get one of these plan on upgrading the chip cooler on it.

Do a search on this model and you will see this is pretty common.

If true, good information.

Newegg refurbs are about 50/50 for me - some work great and some have really bad artifacts even at stock speeds. The last one I tried was a 9800XT for $320 and someone had flashed it with a 9800 Pro bios and it defaulted to 380/340 and still had terrible artifacts at those speeds. Newegg is always great about refunds on defective refurbs and you're only out return shipping, so it's definitely worth a shot. Good luck!

Doobie

you should have re flashed that XT and RMA'ed it to ATI. ATI doesn't require reciept, proof of purchase, original packaging or anything for warranty service.

Dont get me wrong, other than that it was a great card. NEWEGG rma'd me an ATI version of the same, nicer fan..

Just watch for it, there is no fan monitoring on these cards. hopefully its anew fan w diffrent bearings or something.

It appeared as artifacting at first, but still funtioned, then when I rebooted it wouldnt post.

So on refurbs, does newegg just refund your money, or do they replace it with something similar? I'm assuming just a refund...

Did it end up being an ATI or a Sapphire? Someone mentioned that ATI will RMA their cards no questions asked. I'd rather have a working card than my money back!

FedEx tracking shows mine is waiting for me, tho' I'm not holding my breath on it working from what people are posting.

It's a Sapphire.

Anyone around with experience dealing with Sapphire's RMA policy?

I already filled out Newegg's form, but I'd be interested in hearing Sapphire's policy.
