HOT??? 18" LCD Monitor $398.97

Somebody on my floor has this LCD and i would not put it in the same class for gaming as a good flat 19" crt. There IS very noticeable ghosting in UT2k3, NOFL2 and Doom3... especially when sliding while looking in the opposite direction. I've tried it and it just doesn't "feel" right to me.

Just my 2 cents.. if you have this LCD and are happy with it then more power to you.

Well if you buy it @ like BestBuy.com or Staples.com for say you can do an instore return, therefor there is no return shipping charges

why would someone like myself buy from their website(s) when I can be there in person within a 30 minute drive?

there are two things I will not buy online:

1. computer monitors.

and

2. digital cameras.

I wanna be able to try both of these out before I decide to keep them and thats something that I cannot do w/ a Dell monitor.

as far as the digi-cams goes, I wanna be able to see if the camera I'm buying has any dead or hot pixels in the CCD before I'm stuck with it forever.

again, you cant see these kinds of things when you're buying them online but you can see them when you take it home from the store and you can immediately return it if you have to.

yeah you can, I look @ them @ BestBuy or something, then buy it online somewhere

dude, you're missing my point.

say you find a monitor that you like at Best Buy and you decide to buy it from an online retailor cuz they were cheaper.

okay, so you saved yourself $40 and the UPS man brings you your monitor.

you hook it up and find a nice surprise: the screen has 3 dead pixels right out of the box.

now what?

you get to pack it up again, drive to a shipping center, spend who knows how much on return shipping and guess what? you still dont have a monitor.

now, if you had bought that monitor locally, you could drive down there and get another monitor or better yet, get your money back.

its just not that simple w/ mail order stuff.

(and by the way, the SAME EXACT thing goes w/ cameras. you wont know if you have a dud until you get it in your hot little hands.)

Well, I went ahead and pulled the deal that Engineer was suggesting for the Dell 1800FP (20% + 10% coupon). Final total was $496.98 (including Tax and Shipping). Only $70 more for the Dell (which has DVI), so it seemed like a smart purchase. Since I bought the Microtek this past Friday, I'll compare the two side by side and then give a report. Will return one or the other, but most likely will return the Microtek.

I went by the two Walmart stores in Frederick, MD and asked them about this. One said they didn't have a computer to check the status on. The other checked and said these numbers did not show up in the home office data base. I called 1-800-Walmart last night around 9PM and gave them all the numbers. The local store called back around 3PM today and told me they were shipping a monitor to the store and it would be here in about two weeks. I'll let you know how it goes.

Well, the Dell has yet to arrive, and I am a little dismayed to see the price $50 lower than when I ordered it. So here goes with a price adjustment call into Dell.

Update: Spoke to a CSR named Debra, and they wouldn't price adjust to a different division. Oh well. She said the item has been shipped though.

Call back and speak with a different rep. It all depends on who you talk to most of the time. Be nice, but firm. You can always refuse shippment and then reorder the other at a lower price. Tell them that.

I just got off an order for the 1800FP Dell monitor before midnight. I didn't need to order the port replicator like some people over at FW seem to think. (BTW, what is wrong with using the name of FW? Does Anand's think that people aren't going to use both?)

I think the Dell monitor is a better buy at $450 since it has the DVI input. Although none of my computers have this input, I expect that this will be very common in the near future. I belive I have seen this input on some inexpensive Intel mobos based on the 815 chipset which is not even close to being a new item. So I expect it to start showing up on a lot of mobos.

Wasn't there someone in this thread that pointed out that the differences between digital/analog are not noticeable to the eye...lol. People I am glad that you are willing to pay more for the dell to appease your mind. One of my officemates has a dell lcd ( don't know which model but just bought within last 2 months) and it has more ghosting than my microtek. I thought the dell looked good until I bought home this microtek. Something about name brands mentality...lol. You also were the ones who bought a packard-bell...lol.

Anyways, I hope you enjoy your microteks. They rock! $398 is cheap for this quality.

As for slapping 'the monkey' perhaps you should look no further than yourself

Wow, if I didn't know any better, I'd swear you were a troll for Microtek.

To each his own, but having done research on the two monitors, I'm willing to see if there is a perceptible difference in quality between the two.

That's not to say that the Microtek isn't a bad monitor; I'm satisfied with it (although I did get a halo problem earlier this afternoon). However, I'm all about making decisions based on my experience with my own computer, rather than the fanboisms you find off of the Internet.

BTW, just saw tonight, Tiger Direct is selling a Cornea MP704 (17" LCD, 20 MS, 400:1 Brightness, 270 cd/m2) for $299 AR. Greal Deal.

I bought this monitor and out of the box it had 3 dead pixels they soon started breeding. 20 minutes on the phone and it was replaced. Got it 2 days later at my house and they came and picked up the defective 2 days after that at my house. I dont consider that a hassle! Dell had excellent customer service and delivered great. I have no dead pixels on the new one by the way...

I had both of these monitors and the DELL has no ghosting so far for me where as the Microtek had ghosting while web browsing as well as during gaming plus the halo effect and the vertical faded lines
Or maybe you got the only "good" microtek

Anyway as I stated earlier I have seen three of these monitors and not one of them look bad. Enjoy your dell..lol.

Lets think about this. You buy microtek and its wonderful and great for the first two days then the 'name brand' monitor goes on sell and oOOooOs/Aahhahahas take place therefore you must have it as well and now the microtek is no more any good because microtek doesn't have nifty commercials and PR machine. If you spent money on an education--immediately seek a refund.
