Another nice find Ross MAN :)

My wife needs a scanner and this would be perfect.

I had a parallel port UMAX about three years ago. Paid much more than this.

burnedout - Yeah I know the feeling, here's even more evidence as to why I should be the spokesperson for DealAddictsAnonymous

Back in January 1999 I just had to have a scanner so against my friends advice, "Ross you don't need a scanner, you won't use it, don't buy it". Of course what did I do? I paid $129 for an Agfa SnapScan 1212u at Fry's Electronics here in Portland, Oregon. There was a $30 mail in rebate, which of course I flaked off on and did not mail in. I only used the scanner ONCE. Gone were my initial visions of scanning everything text I owned, using the OCR to have a digital record of everything so I can throw a lot of stuff away. The pile of stuff remains, as does the $129 debit to my checking account, grr!

To make it even more pathetic I bought this scanner from Insight.com 2 months ago for $39.99 and haven't sent in the rebate yet, which has to be done by 11/30/2000 by the way.

Even better a month ago I bought a Canon MFC multi function thingie which scans/faxes/prints/copies for $169 from Staples.com with a $50 rebate. I will be returning the box to Staples B&M because I don't need it but it was a damned good deal and still is if I mailed in the $50 rebate - which probably has expired by now.

I NEED HELP!

egad RossMAN! Time to take control of the "Hot Deals" half of your brain. By not mailing in rebates and getting things you dont need you're becoming an average consumer, and we all know thats not who we are here. Get it together, make Anand proud of you :)

Friend of mine has this scanner and it is total junk
It has a problem with the USB interface disappearing everytime the
computer is turned off and then back on

This scanner is very slow. I do not have the problem with USB like one mentioned above (there is USB patch for Win 98SE, try it), but the scanner takes about half a minute to warm up (which it does before each scan), prescanning and scanning is about twice as slow as my 2-years old Acer AM12Eplus which is not speed demon itself.

There are two rebates listed. The new one expires 12/02, the old one expired 11/18.

Id like to know what kind of scanner people had before and why they would downgrade to this one. Last time this deal came around people complained of the speed. I had a Microtek scanner and this umax KILLS it in speed its simply blazing from what im used to. And i got my working somewhat ok in win2k..i just have to use windows imaging (which is what i usually use anyways to just scan a quick pic) save it then open in photoshop

Just for ref - on Win2000 -

I just got an Astra 1600u ($25 after rebate - but I needed it last week!) which uses the same software/updater linked to above.

It works fine. The software appears very crude and is poorly designed in terms of interface/useability, but it actually has more features (just awkward)than well reviewed Agfa software I had (For example you can set a custom descreen filter resolution). Also it works better with Win2000 (for me).
My Agfa software - which is officially win2k compatible - stopped working and consistently gave me the Blue Screen of Death. Go figure.

At this point, I think of scanners as essentially disposeable. If the software hits a glitch or the hardware weirds out, buy a new one (For $15 - amazing).

I have *this* scanner and it does work with WinME and Win2K. I did have to muck around with different driver version, both directly from UMAX and those included with the OSes. I would recommend folks just plug the scanner into your computer and see what happens. Only use VistaScan if absolutely needed (I am using it on both OSes and don't think it would work without it. However, I installed the software before connecting it to my computer, so I don't know what would have happened with another install scenario. I am using the Win2K-included UMAX 1600U driver, and one of the VistaScan drivers for WinME.)

I have this scanner also. I was shocked that when I was installing beta software for the next home version of Windows (based on Win 2000) this scanner was identified, installed and worked perfectly during the upgrade from Windows 98. So I think these Umax scanners will work with Win2000 and future operating systems.

This scanner seems to work fine for me in Win Me. It's not slower than others <$100.
Hey SUOrangeman, got a link on a good how-to article for a RAID array? I plan on a couple of 30 gig WD drives with the hot deal IWill raid card.

For the person who didn't like the light always on with this scanner - you can turn it off through their software. But then the software has to be in the start-up group. That's annoying, but it works.

Since today marks the beginning of Christmas Shopping 2000 I figure it's time for this thread to get a little bump to the top ...

Scanner is dirt slow, but not bad for the price if that is all you have. I just got the Mustek X6 EPP scanner from a deal here last week (+/- $10??). The Mustek EPP blows away the Umax USB scanner. Since EPP is twice as fast as USB, this is really no surprise. The Umax will now become one of those cheap Christmas gifts you throw in at the last minute. This is my second Umax scanner, and the other was an EPP model. Both ran at about the same nasty slow pace. Plus the first Umax one kept having the glass fall in, so make sure you do not put anything on top of the scanner. These Umax scanners are the worst for construction quality.

Just a reminder to those of you who purchased the UMAX Astra 2010U for $10 from Insight

Your $30 rebate must be postmarked by today 11/30/2000.

I didn't have a sales receipt and don't believe I received an e-mail order confirmation either (ordered over the phone) so I am including a copy of my packing slip.

Please remember to copy ALL of your rebate documents before mailing them. Let's try and bump up this thread moderately today to remind everyone else.

I used to work at UMAX, the Receiving side of the company and let me tell you this, this scanner in particular sucks!!~!!! Although it is USB, the 'U' at the end of the model number, it is still slow and the quality of the scans aren't worth the price. IF you are using this for home, then I guess it is okay if you can spare a little bit of quality. Otherwise, for more serious people, get a Canon scanner.

Don't mean to crap on your thread ROSSMAN, but just letting people kjnow what they are going to buy. Good deal for 15 bucks...

good luck all
