It just doesn't look big enough to be that brite.

Anyhow, I can tell you that growing up my dad had a 500,000 candlepower rated spotlight, we'd take it fishing when we headed out of Flamingo Bay, just south of the Everglades. Anyhow we'd use it to find our way back at night, and I'd occasionally shine it up in the air. I kid you not, you can see the beam on the clouds if there are any. It's not quite like the big rigs at a store's grand opening type thing, but you could see the white / yellow dot on the clouds.

I used to also have a 1/2 million candle power spotlight, and it looked much bigger than than. I used when I worked on mountain top communication sites. I could see it a long way down a mountain.

Seems to me this one does not use batteries--"just plug the Coleman PML8120 directly into the cigarette lighter socket or 12V power port in your vehicle. The cord and 12 volt plug even tuck away into the handle when not in use" So it should not be that big. If Fry's has it for the same price locally, I'd get it. If not--$3.95 shipping kills the deal for me (it's useless without car).

These units are free at Fry's B&M AMIR.

Note that these only work on those car 12v cig plugs.

Yeah that looks awfully small to be a true 1,000,000 candle power light, but I bet it is still damned bright. lol

I use one (Colman brand) for spotting deer before season to figure out their patterns and check buck size and buck to doe ratio on land I hunt. The one I have (1,000,000 candle power) will illuminate a deer over a half mile away. That is how far off the road several sections I hunt are.

Before any of you take the family out looking for deer, MAKE SURE you have no weapons in your vehicle as most states prohibit this. Mainly cause poachers , (note I didn't say hunters as poachers are NOT hunters), use these to shoot animals at night.

Yea, most won't run while plugged in. You must charge them and then unplug and use. They are very handy to have but spotlights do not have good battery life. Also, I have had friends buy them at Fry's B&M and not get the rebates.

FYI: Costco has a recharable 1.6mil candle power spot light for like $16 or $19. nice ruberized unit. Comes with Cig adapter and AC Adapter to charge. You can get 1.0mil candle power units at Lowes/HomeDepo for similar price.

For $1.99, having one of these in the CAR is awesome....5 years from now I'll probably work. A battery based unit probably wouldn't. Also, a battery based unit u gotta be careful of freezing.

wonder if I can do a pickup at my local Fry's.....I was going there this weekend anyhow. Don't really need it that bad. :)

Thanks,

EDIT: Since some of you asked "how bright is a candle power" I googled and came up with this.....

More info than you really want to know about Candle Power..... HERE (last few paragraphs have your answer)

I've got a 2 million and a 500,000 candle power... the 2 million is incredible for spotting things.

In my opinion, it's a good thing to have in the trunk of the car in case of emergencies. (at that price, anyhow)

It would be easy enough to put a switch on one to allow it to run while plugged in. Odds are the DC jack on it is a mechanical switch, simply put the add-on switch connected to the tabs for the switching mechanism in the jack.

IIRC, Radio Shack sells a 20W bi-pin halogen bulb for around $2. Don't know if it'd fit but the odds are fair, and would give you 275% run-time compared to included bulb.

I was not aware of the freezing problem. Maybe that is why my new 2M CP rechargeable went belly up after one campout. It did drop below freezing. I thought it was cheap and fragile. Got on surpluscomputers.com for $10-15 last fall. I WAS assuming it was the 2-3 foot fall to grassy ground that killed it.:disgust:

i have a rechargeable 1 mil candle power spotlight i got at wallyworld for like 20 bucks about 5 years ago.
It takes 48 hours for a full charge and 20-25 minutes to go dead.

Its pretty bright, when i used it in the rain to change a tire, the raindrops hitting the lens would make a sizzle sound and evaporate.

I just pulled it out of my truckbox last week and charged it up and it still works great.

Be careful about your state laws though. You can get pretty hefty ticket for harrasing wildlife if you are driving around the woods shining this thing around. I won't even mention the trouble you'll get into if you have a rifle in the car as well.

The deer really seem to like it, they just stare at it for a long time when i shine it in their face....................;)

The deer probably wish they had one too.... might be an interesting twist, instead of shining light on deer just give it to them and follow the light. ;)

i got one, its not small at all. the lense alone is atleast 5 inches across. it looks smaller because it has no battery, otherwise its big as the biggest battery based ones i saw at the store. its just shorter is all.

is it bright? yea!! turn it on for and instantly you feel heat on your hand if u put it in front of the lense. shine it at the sky... its a beam alright. leave it running for a while and ur car battery will probably die lol:)

one more day...

Right away that this don't have batt. If you do have it plug in your car, make sure the engine is still running else you might be stranded b/c batt. is dead.

If you see the spot on the cloud, then damn that must be some low cloud. I tried with my 1MCP (with batt that I got from Walmart for like $18) but only see the beam.

What's up with earthling shining lights everywhere? :D
