I have a 25mb .wmv file I need to find a place to put, so I can link to it from my sister's xanga.. so people can see it.

my brother in law died wednesday, and this is the slide show my nephew put together for his memorial service. they've been maintaining a xanga about his battle with cancer for the past year and a bit and.. it's developed quite a following. they want to put the slideshow up so people that were unable to make it to the service can see it, and.. I don't know where to go from here, to make that happen. the main thing I don't understand is bandwidth.. I sorta understand it but the math gets me. say I have a 25mb file and 500 people decide they want to look at it. how much bandwidth is that?

or.. maybe bandwidth is the wrong word.

is 5000mb transfer allowance enough for that? I searched on hosting and found a link to telnap.com, I was wondering would the 1 year 14.95 thing work? I'm not lookin' for a domain, I just need somewhere to put the thing.

so.. what am I lookin' for, where should I look?

That should be more than enough for what you are looking for.

I'd give you a subdomain to use, but I dont have any domains that I think would be appropriate for the type of site you want to put up. I will however, donate a hosting account if you purchase your own domain.

25 x 500 = 12.5GB of bandwidth.

Roughly 12GBs.

Telnap is an excellent budget host. And no, a domain wouldn't be required - you should be able to simply point to the IP address (and account name) where the file was hosted via a URL.

If you have a domain, we can offer you all the space and bandwidth you need for this cause.

A subdomain is also an option.

anno: i'd go with the suggestion proposed by DeviousTrap. you can buy a domain for very cheap at namecheap.com, and then you can get the hosting account set up.

you can probably also post all the xanga stuff on this dedicated hosting location so that you don't have to refer to both pages (or you can just link to the xanga page).

i'm sorry to hear about your loss. :(

nope. you'd still need to get a domain, since i'm pretty sure cpanel cannot measure bandwidth without a domain. after that, it's a piece of cake.

actuarytm is correct. you can simply use the ip or the hosting provider's subdomain.

Not if the hosting provider does not allow it. Using the IP with a host that uses cPanel or DirectAdmin (I'm not 100% sure about the latter) is designed as a temporary thing. The control panels track bandwidth by interpreting the apache's log files to see what files were downloaded, and then adding up the totals. When an IP is used the traffic won't get logged in the specific log file designed for that client's domain name and the traffic will not be counted. It's effectivly one large loophole that some control panels are susceptible to.

Thank you for the clarification, Eric.

That is the true answer, really: it depends (which would be why I used the word should rather than one more definite). Always contact your host for details such as these.

Should be mentioned Eric's offer above regarding the space and bandwidth donation is a very good one, and likely would prove the most inexpensive route.

(Many thanks for such an offer to the community, Eric)

I thank you all for your input and I will.. attempt to suss all this out in the morning. we got home this evening and my nephew im'd me and asked if I could make this happen so.. I *will* but it's so far beyond my current realm of understanding that it's going to take me a little bit to get it worked out.

you guys that have offered assistance will probably be hearing from me tomorrow, or at least some of you.. once I exercise google a bit and figure out just what it is you're telling me. :) I did determine that the domain name I would buy for this purpose is available. next I'll sleep. then.. I'll be back.

thanks some more.

thank you, everybody, for your advice and your offers of hosting and.. all that stuff. and for reacting to my request for info with the compassion it needed. :) I love ATOT. crazy good people.

GideonX has hosted my file for the time being and in a week or so I'll talk to my sister and find out if that's adequate, or if she'd like a more permanant solution.. she might like to set up a more permanant site, once things have settled down a bit. Ross, I will save this info, towards that end.. that looks perfect. my son does decent web work, so if that's what she wants, we can get something worthy put together for her.

I'm not gonna ask her right yet, though. I live 5 hours away so.. when I'm home, it's hard to be useful in a day to day practical sort of way.. this kind of stuff is the way I can help her, and.. I do sincerely appreciate all your assistance.
