Hosting misery....

Recenty got an invoice from my hosting company....£270!!! for one month!....found out that this is because someone has linked direct to 2 files on my webspace without my permission...and for 2 days were using 20GB of bandwith per day....I spotted this and put a stop to it.

Well my credit card say that cannot stop my hosting company taking the money and my hosting company say there is nothing I can do. This really isn't my fault and I have pretty much accepted that I am gonna have to pay the cost even though I cannot afford it.

Is there anything I can do that I have not considered?

Thanks.

Doesn't your ISP give you warning on such activity? Actually my isp gives me unlimited bandwidth.

No they don't....that annoys me a bit, I only have 3GB a month...you would have thought they might warn you....I am looking for a new host who offers Unlimited, have found one that is cheaper for unlimited space and bandwith.

But, my normal bandwith usage is 50-100MB a day...not 20GB :(

Does you hosting company have an option to shut the site down after it goes over its transfer limit? I would check in the terms if they said they require your permission before allowing more bandwidth to be used.

This is all I could find in their T&C's:

5.12 The volume of included data transfer is limited, depending on the chosen package. In the case that no volume limit of data transfer has been defined for a package, the volume is limited to six (6) GB (Gigabytes). The volume of data transfer is the sum of all transfers resulting from the customers package. The additional volume of data transfer will be charged at the following rates: £0.005 per MB (Megabyte). The Company may modify the prices giving fifteen (15) days notice.

NM, this is why some hosting companies do not allow their clients to have out sourced links on their sites. Which means his hosting company should be paying your hosting company for the bill.

I would contact his host A>S>A>P.

From the T&C:

"6.2.6 exceed the relevant data transfer volume applicable to the Specified Service unless the Customer has agreed with the Company to pay Additional Charges as may vary from time to time for the data transfer volume exceeding the agreed level in the Specified Service. "

If you can prove that you never agreed with the company to pay additional charges, you might be off the hook.

Also, you can tell them you will only pay if they can prove that you agreed to the charges knowingly.

This is very helpful, not to mention true...I never agreed to pay any additional charges, I was under the impression that like I have seen with other hosting sites....they would stop my site within a period if I exceeded the bandwith limit or at very least email me a warning to say that my limit had been reached/passed.

I have since found that the site is registered with www.directnic.com....will try contacting them too and will write a letter to oneandone.co.uk.

Update: I have written them a letter outlining how much I think I should be paying, asking to cancel my hosting because of these troubles and enclosed a cheque for the final balance....my card has been stopped because if they took the money I would never get it back.

I have emailed citizens advice....no response.
I have emailed his hosting company....no response (apart from where I spelt the domain wrong...since then nothing)
I have emailed the webmaster of said site....no response.

Nice to see everyone is being so helpful, damn the internet can suck generally sometimes...
