There's a lot of misconceptions and simplistic thoughts here. I have to laugh at the people who propose US send in Rambo type invasions or bomb them back to the stone age, etc. This was purely an internal matter, in a country friendly to the US. Unlike the movies, in real life Rambo doesn't cut it. More likely than not, intrusive US actions would turn the general population away from us-and into the hands of the rebel terrorists.
Shinerburke, we do not have any sizeable amount of troops in the Philipines.
Others of you blame the victim for vacationing in a known dangerous region-that is not correct, see my prior post. This poor guy was several hundred miles (and several islands0 away from the terrorist's stronghold region.
The Philipines government and people have historically been among the US's truest allies in Asia. If their government requests aid (in the form of money, intelligence, training, etc., but not troops), and if we determine that it would be effective to our goals (stabilizing the country and region, eliminating terrrorism) then we should pitch in.
