Hostages in Afghanistan

Hi fellow AT'ers.
I hope you won't mind this thread. I figure that after all the prayers for 9/11 we can remember one more. For the fellow Christians out there I hope this strikes your heart doubly as deep, as people are really laying down their lives for the cause of Christianity.

I went to Passion a couple weeks ago in D.C., which is a pretty famous Christian conference in America. Passion The director, and co creator of some awesome songs, Louie Giglio gave a talk about the American humanitarian workers being held in Afghanistan on charges of proselytizing (ie spreading Christianity) under the guise of humanitarian aid. You know, in the midst of all of this, whether you're a Christian or not, they're still Americans and some really really good well intentioned people who gave up the comforts and freedoms of this country because they knew that the Afghan people aren't bad and that people in the world could really benefit from the help of Americans. They gave up EVERYTHING while in the worldly perspective they gained NOTHING. President Bush has made the freedom of these people a key point in reaching an agreement with the Taliban but while everything's going on, they are still there, day after day, imprisoned under the worst of circumstances. I pray that God watches over them and grants them a peace which transcends all understanding, and that the Love of the Father will comfort them. Reminding your local Churches or Campus Ministries or just friends during lunch will help everyone reallize that even as we get back to our everyday living, there's more to life than the daily grind. More than the comforts and joy thats achieved when we ourselves or our own families are fine.

Thanks guys.

those folks used poor judgement trying to convert muslems in a country where that act is given the death sentence.Hopefully the military situation will help them leave.

ok, <b> "CStrikeAddict" </b> here's what u do. buy the bernelli auto shotgun for $5000, select your team and join the side as anti-terrorists. defuse any bombs along the way, and hope that within 5 minutes your speakers don't say "Terrorists Win!"

if ur cheap u can settle for the dinky gun the server gives u.

while their are *hot spots* in afghanistan, this is not a hot deal.

on another note, i'm sure the hostages won't mind dying for their faith, for then they will be persecuted and die for their beliefs... just like JC

IMO, pushing your religion on someone is just about half as bad as using your religion to justify killing.

Those people were stupid, if selfless in their own eyes, and will suffer the conseqeunces of their stupidity. Here's hoping they get out OK and learn some common sense, in that order.

BTW, this is pretty OT!

I am afraid I disagree whole-heartly.

Converting people to christianity is rarely noble. I find the moral high ground of 'our religion is better than yours" insulting. One's religion is not nearly as important as how one leads their life. A religious label is just that.

I could go on about Christianity, but I think I made my point.

How about the freedom to chose your own religion ? How bad is that according to your scale ?

i really do hope those people get out alive.however i cant help wondering what they were thinking when they went in there in the first place. They must have known about the taliban and how ruthless they are.

its funny you should mention that.... what are these missionaries doing? right....I guess they are allowing others to practice their religion freely by converting them? That's perfectly logical. ;) That not a real brilliant argument there....

i never said afganistan was a utopia so don't bend my words.

Funny thing is that if you where living there I don't think you had to chance to speak like you do in a mostly christian country like US. Christianity is one of the most tolerant religions and my point was that everybody should be free to chose their own religion.
You hahe chosed to be an Atheist... good for you but I don't see why you feel the need to insult other religions ? Insecurity ?

<<<Christianity is one of the most tolerant religions >>>

Crusades in Europe? Burning witches in Salem?

Very few religions are tolerant, becuase they are based on the belief that the adherents are right and the unbelievers are wrong.

Granted this IS off topic, but let's just hope they get out okay. I go to Baylor, and I know of the church that the hostages went to here in Waco (Antioch, known for its overbearing Christians), and I too think that their missionary work could have been better thoughout. BUT, they are people and they are Americans, so let's just hope for the best. There's no need to try and act like a hard-@$$ (VaG, Fausto1)when nobody knows who eachother is. My two cents....
