Security forces did not plan to storm the building, officials said, but were prompted when the hostage-takers set off explosions early Friday afternoon, opened fire on fleeing hostages then began to try to escape.

Gunfire rang out for hours as security forces chased hostage-takers, who split up to flee. Interfax and the ITAR-Tass news agency reported the three militants holed up in the basement may include the head of the group. Another group took refuge in a nearby house where tanks moved in.

that sucks, wondered why they started the explosions and shooting.

According to CNN.com

There are many fatalities in the hostage crisis at a southern Russian school, an official said today. The official said 60 bodies have been identified. Some children still are being held hostage and a gunbattle continues at the school, the official said.

That is from the front page. It doesn't look like anything has "ended" yet.

:(
Usually nothing shocks me....I saw some pictures of dead children underneath white sheets (you could see their hair) & parents lifting up the sheet to see if it was their child.

I cried.

So not only did they hold them hostage, but they raped and molested them too? Fvcking sick cowardly bastards. Takes a real man to storm a school and hold children hostage. :| Reading sh!t like this makes me want to become a mercenary and go ape sh!t on these maggots.
The CNN article mentions that a lot of kids came out like that, not just girls. It may be a bit early to jump to conclusions.

The CNN link has this paragraph -
Children who survived said they were denied food and water and had to take off their clothes because of heat. Some boys said that because they lacked liquids, they had to drink their own urine.
Which doesn't necessarily preclude anything of a worse nature happening, but hopefully the heat factor was all there was to it.

The standoff hasn't ended yet. They are still battling with hostage takers inside the school.

So many different numbers and stories coming out. Take it all as just rumours until we start getting something consistent.

I think there is no point to even negotiate with the hostage takers anymore. They are there to kill and die. Just amass the troops and storm in.

maybe it's just me, but the stories I have seen on CNN and MSNBC make it seem like the Russians stormed the gym first...only in passing do they mention that explosions inside occured first and also that that the hostage takers opened fire on the some hostages that tried to escape...

guess that makes better headlines for TV...at least the articles on the cnn.com and msn.com mention that...

No, even though both of these terms are very similar, they evoke very different emotions to the listeners/viewers. Terrorists ~ fear; Hostage-takers ~ anger.

What makes it worse is that the Russians seemed to be waiting. They didn't go in until the bombs went off. They were actually trying to save children and not just storm in shooting. It wasn't as if they were trigger happy at all. Man terrorists who kill children need to suffer.

They have been stating for the past 2 days that they were not going to storm the gym...only after the explosion in the gym and after the terrorists started shooting at some hostages trying to escape did they make their move...

being trigger happy with over 1000 hostages (is that still the latest number flying around) will probably make more than just the terrorists suffer IMO...

Thats my point. It makes the situation all the more worse because the russians were trying to save lives. It wasn't as if they went in guns blazing not caring. The situation is that much more sad and frustrating.

The terrorists were just going to let the children die from hunger and lack of water anyways. I hope Russia tortures the hell out of the captured members
