Initial hostage count said to be wrong, roughtly 1000 instead of 350-400.
Current death count unsertain, a camera man said he saw roughly 100 bodies in the gym.

What I don't get is how 13 militants escaped. Yahoo reports some fled into a house nearby. wtf, nice perimeter Russia. To think you have one of the baddest special forces ops on the planet, yet you can't setup a simple perimeter. I still think they should have gassed the gym.

That is completly sad to read. If they want peace they are only going to piss off more people with the way they are going about it. Dont see an end in sight anytime soon.

Sad.

But a better ending than I would have thought.
Usually the Russians end up killing all of the hostages along with the kidnappers.

The last time they tried gas (the Moscow movie theater), they killed 41 militants and like 130 hostages. Bad idea. Especially since kids are especially susceptible to any sort of gas weapon.

I read somewhere that local citizens who were waiting for their kids outside with guns also opened fire on the militants when they appeared on the rooftop...creating a deadly crossfire trapping special forces. Also, apparently the Russians were not ready when fighting broke out (i.e. they did not launch the attack but were forced to respond) and that's how some managed to escape. Others escaped by fleeing intermingled with the hostages.

They also had a sh!t perimiter.
Look at the number of family members, or civilians with guns around the school.

They had a very poor system of crowd control. They shoul have had an area around the school that had been clear of non-military personell for a long time, they had ~40 hours of siege in which to do it.

It was totally the Russians fault that people could escape, because they had a long time to move in forces and get a perimiter set up.

Its about time someone got hard-nosed with terrorists. None of this pansy feel good crap trying to make everyone happy. In something like this, there's gonna be casualties, on both sides. If I was the pres of Russia, I'd give a big FU to Chechnya and have completely demolished the place. Its the pandering to terrorists that shows them you are weak. Meh.

and what about the hundreds if not thousands of innocents that would be killed in the process?...which will invariably create more terrorists?

damn straight. here's hoping in 10-20 years people will be in office that agree with me though. There is WAY too much appeasing all sides in the world today. Everyone cannot be happy, it just won't work.

Notice the picture toward the bottom of the article -- young women and girls that look like they're clothes had been ripped off. So not only did they hold them hostage, but they raped and molested them too? Fvcking sick cowardly bastards. Takes a real man to storm a school and hold children hostage. :| Reading sh!t like this makes me want to become a mercenary and go ape sh!t on these maggots.

Why did CNN call those terrorists "hostage-takers" instead of "terrorists"? sympathy for the devil?

The CNN article mentions that a lot of kids came out like that, not just girls. It may be a bit early to jump to conclusions.

What I don't get is why the media is ignoring a sizable portion of who these terrorists are. They are always referred to as militants or rebels, this is true, but they are also Muslim extremists. Sounds kind of familiar. They'd be doing this here too if they could.

From what I've seen, pretty much all of the children came out with only underwear on.
Males and females.

I dont know about adults, hard to tell who was a hostage and who was a civilian when they have no controlled area around the school.

The news reporter who commented on the lack of clothing didn't indicate that anyone had been raped, he just said he didn't know why all the children had had their clothes removed.

Most of the people (both genders) were unclothed... the main reason cited is that it was unbearably hot inside the school, and people removed their clothes to reduce the heat.

That said, I share your anger towards the terrorists. I don't see how anyone can be a Chechan apologist, especially considering that the reason behind their whole motivation is to form an oppressive Islamic fundamentalist theocracy, and that the main reason they're waging war is because other people don't subscribe to their religion.

They are Muslim. They WILL do that to American children if they have the chance.

The terrorists would not allow any of the kids to have food or drink. The kids would have started dieing soon anyways. They forced the Russians hand.

Hopefully they can catch some of them alive and torture information from them before they kill them.

How cowardly do you have to be to take hostage and kill kids? On first day of school no less.

my same thought... even though they could escape as disguised hostages... but weren't they all children?
