Hospital goes smoke free 7/4/07

So yeah the hospital I work at will go smoke free on July 4th inside and out. No smoking on any property run by the facility which includes hospital, clinics, nursing school and outlying offices.

Should I not come to work for the first few days? :Q

I fear the angry smokers not getting their crack fix!

Im scared someone hold me

Wait, they're just doing that now? I would have expected this to be standard procedure at most/all hospitals in the U.S.

I thought all hospitals had instituted this years ago. I still see smokers around hospitals, but they're off hospital property (meaning they hang around the sidewalk or bus shelters).

Yeah they should have done it a long time ago no doubt but at least their finally getting it right.

They have designated smoking areas all over the place but the main one is right out front of the primary hospital entry. So your dropping grandma off for a hip replacement right out front and off to the right is a crowd of people with IV's as well as employees lighting up.

WTF right?

EDIT: Used to have a smoking area on a remote roof out of sight till someone jumped off years ago 🙁

There must be some sort of national push for this. We have 6 campuses going totally smoke free on that same day.

There are some people complete freaking out about this and considering quitting(work).

I'm surprised it's taken this long. When my wife was in the hospital last year, I noticed they had a no smoking policy on all hospital and surrounding property, including parks, parking garages etc. I was so nice not having to wade through a horde of addicts puffing away each time you enter / exit.

If they quit I have no problem with that at all. Smokers tend to take 5-6 extra breaks from non smokers so we will be better off without them.

Now the freaking out part is what Im worried about as a few I've spoken with seem to think they are going to rebel against "The Man" and have a "the man ain't gonna hold me down" attitude.

Way to go hospital! Smokers should only be allowed to smoke in their homes! Or some other smoke controlled areas like they have in some airports.

The hospital I work at did this about a year ago. It makes total sense for employees. The problem is telling visitors they cant go outside and have a smoke while a loved one is going through a tough time.

I just hope those surgents don't end up with shakey hands from lack of nicotine. I can only imagine how many malpractice suits are going to be a result of this.

mine goes smoke free starting July. i'm going to eat beans and lots of cabage and lettuce and walk around farting and if someone complains i will tell them too bad life is a bitch, be thankful i'm not smoking !

Exactly. Banning smoking outdoors (at a reasonable distance from the building) is pretty ridiculous.. and I'm not even a smoker.

I was at a hospital in Germany (Freising) about 2 months ago, damn they still allowed smoking inside the cafeteria (designated areas only) and they had at least 2 different beers on tap.
