Horrid Motel experiences

So is there some binding contract after signing up for a motel room and then after seeing the state of the room decided not to stay there anymore?

I went to a motel, signed up for a room and was given the key. Went up to my room and was greeted with stained walls, a hole in the bathroom and old and and unkept toilets. This was not some sleazy place too. cost almost $50 for a single. So I went back to the front desk and told the guy I wanted another room. He gave me another, I went up to it and it was barely better. So I go back and tell him that I will be going elsewhere. I paid with my credit card and he claims that he is a temporary person and so he does not know how to make refunds. He told me that the manager will be back in the morning. So I said I will be back in the morning for the refund to my CC. I went down the street and I am now at an econolodge. What happens in these situations? Do you folks request to see the rooms first before paying or what? In some of the more expensive places (Holiday Inn Express) I am not charged until around midnight or later (I have woken up to the bill slid under my door). Gah, I am not making much sense. I am kinda upset about the state of the place. If it comes to it I guess I could just call the CC company and dispute.

Cliffs:
1. Rented a room in a motel for the night.
2. Rooms there were generally nasty.
3. Temp employee could not refund charge to CC immediately. Now posting from an econolodge down the street
4. Just ranting and upset in general. Anyone ever run into this situation?

dispute the charge on your CC.

There have been several times I have been given a less that 'ok' hotel room. I do not want to tell you what I saw, but it was not pretty.
If you bitch enough, you will be able to get a better room, if that doesn't work, definatly dispute the charges.

good luck

what'd you see, what'd you see? ooh ooh, tell me tell me.. pleeeasse!

i usually look up surrounding hotels and check prices. If they are alot cheaper, it's for a reason. 😉

Doesn't work 100% of the time but is a good guide.

You can always ask to see a room before you check in.

And as far as the other stuff, that's pure BS - you should go there right now and tell them to check you out - when I worked at Comfort Inn, people were charged in the morning: and when they had to leave, we'd just check them out on the spot, since we authorize the card to be charged after midnight; I'm sure their system is similar, unless they're the seedy type places where they could charge "by the hour".

For some reason, it doesn't surprise me that you find Holiday Inn Express "one of the more expensive places".

I know that some less-attractive motels/hotels don't have such systems - I can think of a couple that have a credit card machine and a makeshift billing system... and it seems they bill you whenever they freaking want to.

somewhat like the Family Guy episode where the Griffins go to stay at a motel....
semen on the bed, spit up on the bedspread, lipstick on the ceiling, boogers on the walls... the most disturbing thing i remember was what looked to be blood on the ceiling as well.
This was at a Hilton resort in Hawaii too. :|

I refuse to stay at another Hilton again. That is not the first time we have had issues with the hotel chain.

$119 a night is more expensice than $50 a night. Plus I wanted a motel not a hotel

if you have a good credit card, you could dispute the charges in a 30 second phone call and put it behind you. Thank you amex

and wtf, do you not use priceline? I breathe that stuff man. I got a hotel in brekenridge, sameday, last week, for 55 bucks a night, and that includes taxes and all that. At a holiday inn, no less. That is a bad example too. I have gotten at an omni or hyatt for ~60-80 bux a night. Man do I stick out though.

I dont know where you live..but here (Chicago) and countless other locations and states we stayed w/ a lot of various chains (Knight's Inn, Holiday Inn express, Red Roof etc..etc..) for a nite already we never paid more than...say $70 or $80 or so which already includes tax and everything...often less, depending on season.....$119 is definitly way over the top and $50 for a dirthole too.

and yeah i have some stories too:

() once stayed at a red roof in hopes to spend kind of like a mini vacation for a day, on a weekend.
FVCKtards started doing construction (hammering, renovating, drilling, sawing etc.) basically in the room below us at about 6:00/morning.
We got half the monet refunded, tho. But i was VERY pissed off. Came home from the "mini vacatio0n" straight to bed because we were tired like crazy.

() Stayed in some motel and either the toilet makes constant weird noises or the aircondition rattles...another night without sleep.

If you're ever in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and want a cheap nice place to stay, check the Aspen Inn. $70 quality room for $35 w/tax.

I stay in alot of cheap places because, well, it's winter and the roads suck, and I travel alot to work (100 miles one way) and school (50 miles, one way). After a while, you can tell if the rooms are going to be decent just by the appearance of the reception desk and the person working it. YMMV

Here are my 2 worst motel experiences...same night, same town
Me and a buddy were driving out to California a few years back and we ended up in Grants Pass, Oregon...Probably should have been Grants Piss...We stop at one place and it seemed ok enough from the outside. I should have just turned around when i tried to open the door felt like it was going to fall off the hinges. It was also really weak feeling...Like I could easily punch it down. Anyways, the beds had stains, the walls had stainse and holes, there were bugs, the fridge stunk, window held closed by a metal rod, and the shower was covered in mildew (we slept in the van most nights so this was the main reason we go the hotel). I was so tired so I was almost willing to just deal with it until my friend grabbed one of the towels...It was supposed to be white but was more beige and there were hairs all over it...the curly kind from down below. I lost it and we went straight back to the manger and demanded our money back. He gave us our money back but followed us back to the room since we still had to get out stuff out of it. He looked around the place and tried to get $5 back to messing up the beds and using the bathroom. I just laughed and walked out. We took picutres but Im not sure where they are at. I was actually going to send them to the Oregon Health Department.

Well now we needed somewhere else to stay and it was getting pretty late. We stopped at another place in town (which was a chain unlike the other place). I walked up to the counter and asked for a room and the guy asked me if I wanted smoking or non-smoking. I said I didnt care but he said I had to pick. I say non-smoking and he says non left I then so how about smoking. He says non left. I just turn around without saying anything and walk away. I literally wanted the kill the guy. I was so tired and all I wanted was a bed and a shower. We ended up just sleeping in my car in their parking lot.

I've been in the downtown Richmond Marriott for the last 10 days, only bad experience was waking up one morning to an absolute lack of hot water. Not even mildly warm, freezing ass cold was all there was.

$100+ a night for this place & I couldn't even take a shower.

I take a lot of road trips also. East Coast to West, North to South so it is difficult to plan ahead. Sometimes you feel like stopping and sometime you don't. I am learning though to judge, as you mention, from the reception etc. Last time I stayed at a dirty place and sucked it up. This time I could not take it
