Horrible screen artifacts, what could be the cause?

Hi,

I'm still experiencing issue #3 here.

When it happens (every once in a while), it seems to be attached to certain areas of the screen, like the task bar, the cursor, etc. (which makes me think it's a gfx card issue, but I'm not completely sure).

Have a look at this image which shows what happens if I leave the system for a while (i.e. don't move my mouse around).

Any ideas as to what might be causing this?

TIA,

Glen.

* Monitor
* Monitor cable
* Have you overclocked your video card?
* MB

BTW, This is beyond "Horrible screen artifacts"

Can be drivers/software related too.

Did you try to disable Screen Saver ans set the Desktop Wall Paper to None?

* I didn't have any problems with the monitor before the upgrade. (I do have a small ant problem though)
* I just tried moving the cable around a bit and nothing happens.
* No.
* I wouldn't too be surprised if I cracked the darn thing when trying to get the HSF to fit! But you'd think that that would affect other things as well.

LOL, I know, but that's only when I don't move the mouse around to cause a redraw of the screen.

I believe I have the latest driver, and I recently figured out how to remove old drivers (at which time I removed my previous GFX card's driver, among other things).

No ... how would that help?

Thanks.

Some times, if the issue is software/OS related, it can Kick In when the creen Saver gets into action. Some of the New Screen Savers are Video "Hogs".

The image looks strangely familiar to the last monitor I bought with a broken DVI port. Perhaps yours is just dying because it's intermittent?

I'd say the GPU. I just replaced the GPU on my uncles computer which was doing the EXACT same screen. It was an old GeForce 2, though.

Nah, it tends to happen immediately, no time for the screen saver to start.

Like I said "I didn't have any problems with the monitor before the upgrade." + "I just tried moving the cable around a bit and nothing happens.". Possible, but I'm not convinced.

find a friend, swap components to test.
I actually still have my old card, so if (when) this happens again I'm going to stick it in and see what happens.

Yeah, I'm thinking the GPU.

Thanks guys.

Update:

I've been using my old GPU for nearly three weeks now and I haven't experienced the issue once, so I've returned the new card.

Thanks again for the help.
