Horrible back pain last night

I woke up about 3am this morning with very bad back pain. It was kind of in the mid area - and wasn't actually my back muscles, but those support muscles inside towards the stomach. Usually if I wake up with pain like that I curl up into a ball to try and stretch it, but this time it wasn't helping.

I ended up on the floor laying on top of a heating pad. I woke up again about 5 and it was feeling better so I got back into bed. But this morning I still feel sore - not just my back, but for some reason my whole upper body is sore. My hands are still kind of numb.

What I don't understand is that I have a very good bed, and a very good pillow. It is one of those all viscofoam beds, and so is the pillow. Only thing I can think of is that it was a hot night last night, which makes the foam sink more, and I must have been sleeping on my stomach and pulled those muscles. (kind of like you do in a water bed)

Ever heard of the widowmaker? Sounds like you have one working. What you are describing sounds exactly what a guy here was having. He went to the doc, they ran some tests. Low and behold he had this heart condition they call the widowmaker, can't remember what it is actually called. He had surgery ASAP and was fine but his doc said a lot of people have back pain like that and never realize it is their heart until it explodes on them.

Something as benign as a sneeze or cough can spasm a muscle in your back/abdomen. If they tensed up enough it could pinch a nerve causing the pain/numbness.

Just throwing out ideas.

Just talking about something I saw first hand. Guy came to work and his back was hurting like that. Went to the doc, was having surgery the next morning.

Well that certainly would explain why my upper body soreness/numbness is mostly on my left side. :(

I don't have a history of heart problems in my family though...

Can you explain to me what exactly the connection is?

Well that's fine - but - all I wanted to do was rant about horrible back pain I experienced last night, and now I might have a faulty heart valve? :(

I don't really remember all the details, but it was heart valve related.

I just called the dr. office again and apparently the dr. left for the day already. :( Am I going to make it to tomorrow?

Is there anybody here that can confirm these symptoms with the widowmaker valve condition?

i think its nicknamed The Widowmaker due to the artery where you have the heart attack. let me look this up.

edit: confirmed

blood clot in the left anterior descending artery.
"virtually no symptoms until the victim falls dead suddenly and unexpectedly"

Yea when I looked that up I got the same thing. I'm not finding any info that my back pain and leg numbness and upper body soreness is related. I tried making an appointment with my chiropractor but he's booked all week. :(

Sorry man. Didn't mean to freak you out. Just sounded like you were having the exact same issues the guy here at work was.

How long was he having the issues, or was it all of the sudden?

I remember him saying he had been having back pain for a while, but it suddenly got worse one night and the next day is when he went to the doc.

I woke up again with the same back pain, only it wasn't as bad.

But right now it is still bothering me. Not as bad as this morning, but enough to notice. And my legs feel like they're falling asleep again. Note: The pain isn't right on my back like when you did a hard workout or pulled a muscle while lifiting - it's actually inside, on the other side of my spine. And it hurts most when breathing in.

I did some digging and it looks like it might have to do with nerves or some kind of muscle lining along the diaphram. I didn't find a single article that associated this kind of pain with any heart troubles.

I called my doctor's office, but both doctor and PA were unavailable. Left a note to call be back at work. Nothing. Called against later in the day, doctor left for the day. Asked if PA could call me. Waited, nothing. Next day, no return call. Get home after evening class, and there is a message at home.

I guess I'll just have to go make an appointment and waste dollars to have a doctor prescribe me tylenol.
