Horrible 3dMark2001 score on a great set up!?!?

I don't get it, on the default settings of 3DMark2001 I can't get any better than 4500, but my current set up is the best I've ever had!

ABit KR7A-Raid with 512M Crucail PC2100 DDR
AMD 1.4G Athlon @ 266
Geforce 3, latest detonator drivers
Win98 with all updates
Maxtor 40g UDMA 133 on Raid 3 @ 133

Why am I doing so poorly?

Something is wrong. You should be getting around 8000 with that setup. Have you installed your motherboard drivers? Do you have antialiasing (sp?) turned on?

The motherboard drivers are very imporant. I assume that you just recently put this system together. Did you do a clean install for Win98? Formatting after a really bloated 6 month old Win2k install gave my friend a boost of almost 1000 points. Also, installing the 4in1's will give you a huge increase.

Its a PNY GeForce and yes I have all the drivers 4(in1) loaded. 3dMark defaults to no antialiasing (sp?) and the card itself is set to allow applications set the AA. Its a brand new install, drive was formatted and the OS installed on Wednesday, so there's no need to format...

Everything is 100% up to date, DirectX 8.1 etc.. I downloaded all the lateste drives for eveything I had, to include all the updates

Uuplaku - that computer is truly horrendous. :Q The only thing worth saving is MAYBE the 3.5" drive. Good thing you have a great 2nd system! 🙂

Who - Wow. What to say. Maybe re-install 3DMark. Try installing 3DMark2000 and compare those results too. Click the "defaults" button just to be sure you really have everything on "default".

Man. Something is wrong somewhere.

1. Format c:/u
2. Install Win98
3. Install mobo Drivers.
4. Install Geforce drivers.
5. Install DirectX
6. Install 3dmark2001 and run it.

What's the "u" do? (format c:/u)

Hmm, well on myt current build I fdisk'd it first, so that's about the same, and I'm not really looking forward to formatting again (unless I can take time out to image my drive with Ghost). But you're right, there is something amiss! I got 8000+ from my K7S5A (which btw, I now hate...) and the Abit's a far better board than the ECS...

I had this problem before. Try loading the Via AGP driver separately from the 4-in-1's. You can download it here.

I had problems once getting the AGP driver to load with the 4in1 install program. Installing separately fixed it.

Two things that can happen here:
1) Reinstall the 4 in 1 drivers and try again.
2) You're using AA. I know that the benchmarks say that there's "No AA" but if you enable it in your settings under Nvidia or powerstrip, AA will be used.

Have you run any games? How do they Perform? Try some Quake3 benchmarks and compare them to similar setups, that way you know if its youre system or just 3DMark. A buddy of mine has the exact same problem with BOTH 3DMark 2000 and 2001, he scores horribly for the setup he has, but games run just about as good as they should.

I am having very similar problems but my initial score is a little higher at around 5900. I have a 1.4 OCd to 1.6 Athlon. GeForce3 (Gainward), 512 PC2100 Crucial... What is this 4in1 deal? Can someone explain? Thanks.

I'll try installing the AGP seperately (thanks!) and as I said for AA, it set in the control panel to let the app select it, so with 3Dmark2001 defaulting to none, it shouldn't be using any. Games run great on it though, but one wonders who I would go about getting benchmarks with Quake 3. Is that a seperate function of the game (I don't have it) and perhaps somehitng I could do with UT instead?

He won't be getting around 8000.... high 6's low 7's ...

I'm getting 8000 with my 1.4 and geforce3. I'm overclocking a little though and my processor is an XP. WhoDeeny did not specify if his was a Thunderbird or an XP. If it is a Thunderbird and he is not overclocking anything then you are correct - probably areound 7000. My bad. Still 4500 is pretty ugly.

high 6s low 7's?? i have
GF3Ti200
XP 1600+
512mb DDR PC2100
Barracuda IV 7200rpm

and i get 6200, with newest 4in1's. Is that right?

<< How come you hate your K7S5A ? Did it fail or something ? >>

Yup, both of the boards I bought did!

Darrin, haven't tried it yet, but I do as recommned as well as applying a patch that addressed latency in the Via chipsets, something that inhibited them from actuallay acheinve anythign near their theoretical through put (DMA 133 on the Raid and DAM 100 on the UDE (for the cd))...
