I first switched to Tracfone around May of this year after being disappointed with T-Mobil's lack of coverage in my neighborhood. I ported my old phone number over (which is now 5 years old going back to my first Verizon cell phone) and I was pleased that I actually get coverage while at home again.
In late July I head out for a 3 week vacation. Prior to going on vacation, I pumped in about $140 into minutes for the phone (it is pre-paid) and this translated into 800 minutes or 365 days of coverage. On my phone's display it showed the expiration in July 2009 and over 800 minutes. So all was well.
I come back from vacation Aug 15 and I turn on my phone and it doesn't work. It says "Unregistered SIM" on it, there are no signal bars, and if I try to make a call it just immediately says "Call failed".
No biggie I think to myself. Just call up tech support and they will fix it, right?
I call up that same day and they decide they need to send me a new SIM card to fix the problem. About 2 days later the SIM card arrives - great! But it doesn't work... same problem. I call again, they send me another SIM card. This one doesn't work either. They tell me it is not compatible with my coverage area (zip code).
Finally I get a third SIM card Aug 26 (yesterday) and this one works! I get signal bars, I can make calls. Oh but one problem... the phone number is not my original number... okay, so I call up again and they tell me 'Oh, that number is no loner available' ... no longer available- WTF ?!
I ask to speak to the supervisor and I politely explain the situation and plead for some divine intervention. She puts me on hold several times talking to various departments and finally says there is nothing they can do. They deactivated my number when they issued my last SIM card and that released it to some pool of number and they cannot get it back. They at least admitted their mistake and offered me compensation ... 200 free minutes on my phone ...
:disgust:
Cliffs:
1. I have a prepaid cell phone with Tracfone
2. I pump in one year's worth of minutes
3. I go on 3 week vacation
4. I come back phone does not work
5. They send numerous new SIM cards to fix the problem
6. Once they send me one that actually works, it is set for the wrong phone number
7. They tell me they lost my old number and I can't get it back
