Horrendous Boot Times - Vista x64

a couple weeks ago after installing the update kb935509 (ms says its needed to successfully install sp1 on vista ultimate/enerprise versions) i noticed my boot times have taken tremendously long time to startup after typing in my password. sometimes after i type my password my background takes 30-45seconds to load!!! (theres a solid light blue color in place before it loads up) and after it loads, it takes well over a miunte to start up my av (avg free) and windows live messenger. i have nothing else on startup. after everything loads up everything is fine and dandy but the long load times tick me off. i cant uninstall the update for some reason, and i really don't want to reformat my computer anytime soon. i have all the hotfixes for the 4gb ram on vista applied as well and have defragmented my hdd too. in event viewer, before the update my boot time was consistently under 40000ms, typically 36000ms, but now it is consistently 95000ms to 130000ms in the event viewer. there are no errors regarding any startup items or services so i am perplexed on what is going on. can anyone help me out?
 
Don't know if that will help you, but it seems that my boot times and overall operation is much smoother after Defragmenting and running the dskchk (all 5 stages).
 
thanks for the reply JustaGeek, i ve defragmented the hdd numerous times as well as ran the dskchk but it does not appear to help much, my boot times are still in the 90000ms range in the event viewer. overall operation is fine after everything loads, just that something appears to be hanging after i type in my password. i tried opening taskmanager (takes a little longer to load too) while vista is loading to see if any processes are taking up any cpu time, but the cpu is sitting there @0-3% usage and the hard drive is not thrashing or anything. i did look up the update on google and found out that the update changes/updates the vista bootloader so that bitlocker will work with sp1 on ultimate/enterprise editions of vista but i couldnt find much other than that.
 
thanks for the reply Aberforth, i am not sure if it is the ram, its 24hrs stable on memtest, and everything is good after booting, just that booting it slow but i ll give the vista ram tester a shot.
 
Looks like you have Ultimate 64bit. I am assuming that you have some sort of earlier system backup. If this is the case, restore your image and see if your boot time is shorter.
 
appreciate the reply bigi, i dont really have an earlier system backup, (i always reformatted in the case anything really serious happened to ensure there wouldnt be any potential lingering problems); i use my wd ext hdd as a quick backup of my stuff for reinstalling everything but it still takes a good 3-5 hours to set everything up again. right now im a student so i dont really have that kind of time for the moment being. if anyone knows how to uninstall update kb935509 that would be really appreciated.
 
Probably worth running Window Index Experience to see if Vista can pinpoint any weak spot?
It's perhaps doubtful that it may find it but it sounds like you may be at the wit end of the root cause of the issue.
 
thanks for your input videopho, i ran the vista experience index a few times, got 5.7 each time; there doesnt appear to be a problem with my hardware. i think i will try installing sp1 whenever i have the time and if it still boots up like crap i will have to reformat and avoid that one update. if anyone finds out how to uninstall that update i would love to know how. thanks again.
 
thanks for your reply JustaGeek, well actually, kb935509 is only needed for bitlocker which i am not using but the update is not uninstallable within windows.

Update 935509 contains an update that you must have to correctly service Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption-capable computers. This update is applicable to only the following editions of Windows Vista that include Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption:
? Windows Vista Enterprise
? Windows Vista Ultimate
This update is necessary to install and to uninstall Windows Vista SP1 successfully on these editions.

i got to the view updates under programs and features in control panel, every other update pretty much is right clickable to uninstall, while kb935509 isnt right clickable, and thus not uninstallable within windows which sucks since there was 7 other updates that day i updated, and they all were uninstallable and they didnt help my boot performance when they were uninstalled. my boot performance was fine until i installed those 8 updates.
 
damn... i dont have system restore on. i kinda wished i did now. never had it on ever since i had to reformat winxp a few years back for the first time when system restore didnt help me at that time with some problem i dont remember and it ate away at my hdd space (only had 40gb on that system, i think that was in 2003). damn.
 

System Restore in Vista Ultimate, with the selective Shadow Copy ability (allows you to restore a single file or folder you might have inadvertently erased/edited) is the BEST feature of Ultimate.

It takes up about 15% of the HD space by default, but... it might be worth a LOT when you need it... 😉
