Horific Accident at the Olympic

After watching it again, it kinda sucks cuz you can see his sled actually landed back inside and kept going while he flew right into the pillar. If the situations were reversed, he could've finished the exercise sans sled. 🙁

Absolutely, you would expect the track to contain the rider within the track if they crash. This is an absolute outage.

You don't expect your young people to die competing at the Olympic.

I hope they get sued.

when you are going 100mph on a small sled its not safe. this is not a lawsuit.

BUT they should shut down the track. they had a interview with a female luger and she said that part of the track is deadly. she almost lost control in the same part and said she was not suprised.

Wow, an absolutely horrific crash. RIP, and i feel for those who tried to bring him back, but you can see from the couple CPR pictures, he was bleeding from everywhere. Very sad, I would also support going on as planned.

It is poignant to watch the guy adjust his helmet before going down the slope knowing these are his last moments on earth.

Poor bastard.

The guy is competing at the absolute top class of the sport and pushing himself to the very limits of his capability in the most important event he has competed at. There are dangers when you push yourself this hard.

No one should be sued. They had time to practice on this track and other riders seemed to be aware of the danger of that corner. He made a decision to push it too hard. He's dead. This is the nature of any dangerous sport.

It is. However to be fair these guys do know that they are risking life and limb every time they go down the track. There may be an argument to be made that the track may have been improperly designed. If so it should be shut down or at least measures should be taken to fix it. However that's also a risk they knowingly take.

Yeah - shit happens sometimes when you're going up to 90mph on only a sled.

yeah a plexiglass tube there would keep people in the track, so they'd slide down rather than fly out. it'd be more like a motorcycle crash where the rider just slides across the grass.

no idea how long it would take to put one together. i'm guessing those are custom fabbed so not tomorrow.

I definitely think they should continue as planned. But at the same time this should certainly force a review of the design of that part of the track. I would fully support delaying the event to say for example install a Plexiglas barrier there.

Definitely this.

I think the fact that someone has died has forced their hand. They will have to do something about it now. Because if they don't and it happens again, there will be a huge backlash from the media.

no need for a tube, just need a plastic partial tube guard at turns. could be clear

I'm sad the guy died but gosh a bunch of you are pansy's. News flash: Sports involving ice, a small sled, and 90mph are dangerous.

Really sad. I wish it hadn't taken a death to reveal the flaw in that design.

This was not the only bend I saw problems with. There were design issues in other places that were clearly unsafe. For instance, half-height walls with 90 degree corners within reach of the sledder in numerous places.

Engineers have an ethical obligation to include safety as the primary concern in their designs and constructions. IMO, the engineers that designed this track were clearly negligent. They should be sued and have their professional licenses removed. The company should be disbanded.

There is no excuse for the poor safety construction of this track.

Thank you Gunbuster, you really brought things into a whole new perspective that I for one, completely missed.

I look forward to reading more enlightening and sage words from you, good sir.

a bit worse than when the skiier ran into the crane just sitting on the side of the slope. What are the designers thinking?
