Living in Michigan, me and all of my beer friends get plenty of Hopslam. Tonight, I'm bringing to a party:

2 bottles of 120 Minute IPA
2 cans of Oskar Blues' Deviant Dales...we don't get much from OB here so after enjoying it working down in Alabama, I brought 2 cans home.

Mmmm, beer.

I was a huge hophead before moving out to the UK for two years. Oddly, I prefer the more well rounded Pale Ales now. My favorite local probably being Manny's Pale Ale. Still plenty of hops, just better balanced with the malt bill.

My time in the UK turned me into a big fan of the English Bitter. A close cousin to IPAs I guess. Hard to find good versions of it here, but there's a brewpub that makes nice one.

Can't find 120min in Cleveland.

Hopslam is incredible though.

Ever had a 75min? I found a 22 of it ONCE. Never again. I want it though.

I've had the 90 minute and I loved it. Not sure if I've tried the 75. The 120 minute is expensive, ($10 per 12oz bottle) but I highly recommend you go out of your way to find it. I've never had anything like it. I aged one for a few years (they're already aged a few years when they hit the shelf if I remember correctly) and it got even better! The alcohol content can be upwards of 20% so be careful.

sign me up for that party!! I'm overdue for some 120-minute. But for tonight (for obvious reasons) it's strictly Unibroue La Fin Du Monde for me.

Hahaha, excellent choice. We all love Unibroue too! The yearly beer fest we attend in Frankenmuth, MI always has a strong representation by Unibroue...it's one of my go-to beers when I'm not sure what I want next but I want something tasty and strong.

I might even have to pick up a 4-pack of that on the way! Although, I know he bought a keg of Bastone's new seasonal, their Imperial Coconut Porter.

It's a bitch to find.

I think re: 120min...you can't get it in Ohio, due to the ABV. I've looked for it...at every craft beer store I can find, no dice. (I had it a few times in DC...which set me on my quest to find it locally)

I tried Duvel. Not a hoppy beer but very highly rated on some beer sites out there. Kind of a high ABV. I didn't really like it though. I guess high ABV is not to my taste. Are there any hoppy beers you guys recommend with a low ABV? Are IPAs generally low ABV or high?

I see Pliny the Elder is only 8% ABV so that's one on my next to find list now. Though if it's West coast it may be hard to find here in the East coast.

Yeah, you won't find it on the East coast unless you're in or around Philly.

Most hoppy beer I like is Bell's Two Hearted ale, can only stand about 24 ounces of it though

High abv beers tend to have strong flavors. Can be more hoppy, more malty, whatever. Vice versa is also true: strongly flavored beers tend to have high abv.

I don't like Duvel either. But I do like IPAs and other hoppy beers with high abv. And I do like some high abv non-hoppy beers, like a Chimay blue.

The lesson, as always, is to keep drinking lots of different beers. That way you'll find out for certain what you like.

Oh, and IPAs tend to have more abv than your average beer, and 8% abv is a high alcohol beer. Your average beer is something like 5%.

Oops my beer noobness is showing. For some reason I thought Duvel was 11% but it is 8.5% ABV. Yeah I'll be branching out my beer tastes soon. I like these threads they help point me in the right direction as to which to try next because there are so many choices it's hard to choose what to try next.

West Coast IPA's how I do enjoy you -

My go to's:

Lagunitas IPA
Sierra Nevada Torpedo
New Belgium Ranger
Bridgeport Hop Czar
Deschutes Inversion
Green Flash West Coast IPA
Anderson Valley Hop Ottin IPA

& Special's

Russina River Pliny the Elder
Sierra Nevada Hoptimum

*Dogfish - you 60/90/120 lovers need to branch out to the west coast IPA's, the Dogfish brews are good, just not the be all end all of IPA's like you all claim.

Nice list and I am one that much prefers West Coast IPAs to East Coast and especially English IPAs.

Lagunitas has the best brewery tour I have ever been on. Really informative and generous with the samples. I prefer Hop Stoopid to their IPA though.

Missing from that list...
Bear Republic's:
Racer 5
Racer X
Hop Rod Rye

Moylin's makes great beer as well. I had their IPA, DIPA, TIPA, and QIPA when we visited last month.

Believe it or not... Lazy Magnolia's Timber Beast is a great Rye DIPA. They are typically known for their Southern Pecan, but I can't stand it.

Another new one is Back Forty's Freckle Belly IPA. Lots of pine and citrus from it.

They will only distribute if they can guarantee it stays cold. Hands down though, best DIPA I have ever had. Great brewpub as well.

I'm predominately a west coast beer guy. That said, the 90 minute is one of my favorite IPAs.

There is a disturbing lack of Stone in here... They pretty much paved the way for hoppy beers IMO.

From them you got:

Stone IPA
Arrogant Bastard
Double Bastard
Ruination
Enjoy By

I dont think there is a better double IPA in existence as that Stone Ruination 10 year anniversary.

Other IPAs or hoppy beers that I love:

Green Flash West Coast IPA
Green Flash Hop Head Red
Ballast Point Sculpin IPA
Port Brewing Mongo IPA
Russian River Pliney The Elder
Russian River Blind Pig
Lagunitas Hop Stoopid

Those are just off the top of my head, from a larger known craft brewery. There are a couple Micros here in Southern California who make a pretty damn good IPA as well, but they aren't distributed out of the area, so its unlikely they would be well known.

Also, I make an IPA that is damn good :)

I'm going to Spec's/HEB Central Market later to pick up a few bombers and sixers for Christmas. Glad to see this thread is so alive :)
