from the games, the Xbox is more focused on action, as related to Nintendo, which isn't really focused on realistic action (eg car racing vs. mario cart)

if I wasn't just let go, I'd grab an Xbox

There are advantages and disadvantages to each console:

PS2 - Sony is proven in the market. Largest library of games on a next gen system right now (not including Dreamcast). Games coming out this Christmas season are some of the best in the library, but the system is the weakest in terms of power of the three and will begin to show its age soon. If you want features like online play or the hard drive, it will cost you extra to upgrade. Plays DVDs out of the box. $300 pricetag is a bit overpriced to compete with X-Box and GameCube but the great game library should keep PS2 sales going.

X-Box - Highest potential in my opinion, but largest risk. Microsoft is unproven in the market, and without a reputation could go the way of the Dreamcast. Clear online strategy and built in hard drive are its strength. A majority of the games seem marketed specifically at teen/adult audience. Controller may give you problems if you have large hands. If X-Box is sucessful, could be the next Playstation. X-Box is large and runs warm if space is an issue for you. Plays DVDs with $30 remote, no memory card required, and will double up as a hard drive based audio jukebox if you rip audio CDs to its hard drive. Most powerful hardware available so should have the best longevity if Microsoft stays with it. $300 pricetag gives you the most bang for your buck in terms of features.

GameCube - Nintendo isn't going anywhere. Great 1st party games from Nintendo. A majority of games are targeted at a universal audience (children and adults). GameCube is small. Controller is comfortable, especially for smaller hands. Cube is easily modded to support import games. If GameCube doesnt do well enough the Cube maybe limited to mostly 1st party games like the N64 was after awhile. $200 pricetag makes it the most attractive.

Here's my comparison between GC and Xbox:

Technically, people say the Xbox is the most powerful, but I think the differences are very small. They can probably each do some things better than the other... But in the end, both are very capable machines. The controllers are different, but I like both. The Xbox controller is bigger, but it's not that big. I don't have big hands and I don't have a problem. I think you can easily get used to any of them, and while I haven't played that much with the GC controller, I can tell you the Xbox controller is very well made.

People often say GC has the advantage of being lower priced. Yes it's true, but feature-wise, you get what you pay for IMO. If you buy a GC, don't forget you'll have to pick up a memory card or two. Then you'll have to pay again when they release the modem or broadband adapter. Xbox comes ready for broadband, and you have almost infinite memory card space with the hard drive. So in the end, they'll probably cost about the same thing...

The most important thing to look at is games, and that's a personal opinion. In my case, I enjoy more realistic games. For example, I'm sure Mario Kart will be a very fun game, but I'd rather drive real cars in Project Gotham Racing. Nintendo's first party games, while having excellent gameplay and being fun, are just not what I'm interested in. Of course, if those are the games you enjoy playing the most, then you don't have a choice, you'll never see Mario on Xbox... ;) Also, if you're interested in all the good games coming out for PS2 lately, most will be out on Xbox and haven't been announced yet for GC. (Silent Hill 2, MGS X (improved version of MGS2), GTA3, THPS3, etc.) Sega is also making games for Xbox...

If you're getting married, just put all 3 of the consoles on your registry ;) ... You dont need fine china or anything like that, you need video games! :)

"It's all about the games" IMHO

X-Box: So far the only real hit is Halo...
--all-in-all, this console has to prove it can provide something the others can't before it will truly make it's mark. Early on that "something" was suppose to be the online play Halo would provide. Well we all know now the online play was removed from Halo...

Cube: If you like mario, this is where it's at...
--upgraded N64-(IMHO), the games are cleaner looking, but so far nothing special has been shown. The low launch price of $199 will make it a hot seller for Christmas...

PS2: Has at least 5 highly rated games...(GTA3, GT3, MGS2, THPS3, DMC)
--been out a year now, so don't expect anything suprizing to be announced. However, the fact that it has been out awhile and is backward compatible with PS1 games, gives PS2 the largest game library of all consoles to-date.

Myself i look forward to playing Halo-(on the PC...ONLINE), but it will take about 3+ more great games for me to spend that kinda cash just to play Halo on the X-Box...

Gamecube has the best graphics and exclusive titles like Metroid, and Resident Evil series, not to mention awesome launch games like Rogue Squadron II.

Ps2 has a lot of dev power behind it, though personally I'm underwhelmed by the hardware.

Xbox, has a lot of PC type glitches, slowdowns, choppy frames, etc. It's just not up to console standards, and most of its games feel secondrate.

Orbius,

Where are these slowdowns and "PC type glitches" located? I've been playing games on my X-Box for almost a week now and I haven't noticed any of these slowdowns and "PC type glitches" that you describe. Frame rates have been solid for me. I don't think any of the games are second rate either... Halo plays like a great console FPS, better than most FPS's that have been released. DOA3 feels like a solid title even though Gameplay wise it is not much different than DOA2 (but fighting games tend to keep the same gameplay feel from sequel to sequel).

IMHO X-Box is better than GameCube from a graphical standpoint, but that is really just an opinion.. same as yours in regards to the GameCube having better graphics.

I have no problems with GameCube but I think a lot of people have been posting misnomers and rumors about the X-Box and not getting the facts straight.

If you personally own an X-Box and can vouch for these problems then I apologize, but my experience with the X-Box has been completely different. Perhaps if you do own one your X-Box is broken.

What games are you referring to specifically? (I'm supposing you've actually played some of them...)

moonsocket,

you could always goto EB or Sam Goody or something like that and try out each system. All of the systems should have a kiosk that you can play on. The Sam Goody by me was nice because they had the controllers "detached" from the kiosk, meaning the wire gave you some room to pick up the controller and hold it like normal. Most kiosks have the controller almost completely attached to the kiosk so you dont get a good feel for how it actually feels in your hands. In any case, try them out and maybe that will help you decide! :)

Alot of stores turn their Kiosks off to stop loitering. In reality very few Xbox's have broke. As for choppy frames, thats on every system. Perfect example is Nascar Heat 2002 on PS2, CHOPPY, on the Xbox its not choppy. Its called piss poor development. Halo is not choppy there are two slow downs, but nothing under 15-20 fps, and playing with 8 people in multiplayer, no choppiness there either.

Also I have a big beef with some of the gamespot reviews, if you play the games you can tell Gamespot DID not play some of them, or played it for a couple hours and decided that was enough. Perfect example again is Nascar Heat 2002. They say you don't have to break. Obviously they only played the super speedways and not the likes of Bristol or Watkins Glen, both you HAVE TO BREAK or you will be slamming into other cars and/or the wall. Either that or they played in the easy mode which, the game does all the breaking for you... There are other reviews that seem a bit off from my experiances too...

Did I mention the fact that EVERY PS2 port to Xbox, which has improved graphics/more level/fixed gameplay has consistently gotten LOWER scores when compared to the PS2 game, and some of these games have come out a month or two apart. Same goes for the GC, all the multiplatform games which like the Xbox have improvements, get lower scores. Nascar Heat 2002, Nascar Thunder 2002, Madden 2002, suprisingly NBA Live 2002 got an equal score to the PS2 version. I bet MGSX and Crash X, GTA3 all get lower scores on the Xbox too...

And look at Dark Summit, Reviewed 5 days apart, the reviewers claim that the Xbox version is only worthy of a 7.1 while the PS2 supposedly has better graphics and is worthy of a 7.8. WTF? Atleast dont appear to be biased...
