AmdXp 1700+ aka 1.47ghz
Soltek SL-75DRV2 (anyone a "big" retailer that carries this? )
256 megs of DDR ram (micron), Ram active and passive cooling kits for it (I wanna get 150+fsb)
Alpha 8045 heatsink with Sunon 42cfm w/AS2( good enough for ocing to 1.6)?
ATi 8500 oem with copper sinks (good for minor ocing?)
350watt Enermax Ps (I have a 300 watt but I think i will need this for ocing)
Hercules Gaming Theater XP
30 gig 7200 rpm WD Harddrive
Slot load DvD
Lite-on 24x burner
FDD drive
Rounded cabled for everything
Some mod and temp monitering stuff from crazypc.
Win 98 SE (maybe dueal boot with 2k or Xp)
A nicely cooled case

Mostly all of this is coming from newegg

read Tom's review of the 13 boards and in the article it was more stable and just as good or better at ocing as the Epox. I may be wrong though..

Not bad, but not good either....

1) Good luck finding a US retailer that carries the Soltek. I see NICX in CN sells it. Maybe you should go with Epox, MSI, or Asus
2) The Thermalrite SK6 will take you to 1.8+GHz easily.
3) ATI has terrible driver support, and most of us are sick of dealing with them. You cannot go wrong with nVidia.....
4) What about IBM 60GXP hard drives?
5) 98SE?? All you need is Windows XP :)
6) Check out the Antec SX1030/1040 series cases w/ 330w or 400w. Lian Li makes nice, but expensive, aluminum ones.

This is only my .02 cents of course. Goodluck.

1. hmm yea i may go with the epox or asus
2. I thought the alpha was better than the Thermatake Sk-6.
3.. My cousin, who has the 8500, says its great with the new drivers and under Win 98 Se.
4. Yea, I guess i will go with the Ibm drive.
5. Win 98 Se is better for games and I have 0 probs with it. Why fix something when its not broken?
6. I dont have money to spare for Case. I got 3 fans intaking ( 80mm pan's) and 2 out ( Ps and 60mm pan) on my current one ( It is also sprayed blue).

thanks for ur comments!

2) I suppose it will cool slightly better than the SK6, but if you change your CPU frequently you might find it cumbersome.
3) Maybe you should read this, this, and this.
4) 75's had some big failure rates, and I even heard of a class action lawsuit, lol.
5) Your kidding right? 98SE is is inferior to 2K/XP. Until you switch and use it for yourself, i suppose you will never understand.

Hope this helps.

Hmm... lets see, because of the performance increase? You will definitely notice xp running much smoother than 98se, its is all-around a much better operating system. There are absolutely no problems with games, in fact i've noticed a huge increase in gaming quality since i upgraded.

What computer are you upgrading from? Its probably still usable within reasonable means, right? If it still works, why replace it? same thing...

Also, I completely agree with all of John's other comments

Good luck with it.

well none of links work for the freeloader that I am. But I have heard complaints about the 8500. I orginally wanted the G 3 ti 200 but my cousin switched me over. I am still thinking about it. Also there is a review of 98 Se beating Xp in games. lemme see..

Dual boot wont be bad either eh?

I fixed the URL's since you are not a subscriber. For future reference all you need to do is change the subscriber.anandtech.com to forums.anandtech.com :)

About the Os. I have used Win Xp Pro before on many computers. To me it just seems like win 2k with a nice gui and more features ( I have 2k on my laptop).

looks like a pretty nice computer.
dont know anything about that motherboard.. and personally i'm an INtel fan.. but the XP1700 should overclock pretty good and run real fast.
i would have chosen an Nvidia card over ATi, but it should be fine, and yeah- i'm sure you can overclock it.
the hercules gaming theatre XP is sweet! i love mine. so much better than my old creative card.
and those slot loading dvd drives are cool, i want to get one too.. let me know how it works when you get it.

what kind of monitor do you have or are you getting?

i would get the soltek in a hardbeat - but the alpha 8045 does NOT fit on this board.
(I have it official from a soltek person in taiwan and from one of the guys at tom's hardware)

it's a shame..i'd love that board...but i already have my alpha 8045...

I switched from nvidia to ATI, the 8500 just plain rocks! Regardless of which card people like better, the 8500 OEM card has more power than the Ti200 at almost the same price. You'll be getting much more out of your 8500 OEM!

Where can I get the soltek board? Like a well known retailer like Newegg or Mwave? Well i guess I will get the Sk-6 if I can get the soltek at a decent price.

Yes you did, try this setup for your keyboard mouse keyboard + mouse and if you do decide to go Win XP think about getting some more ram it loves it but other than that all else look marvelous !
