My internet connection died a couple days ago so, I did all the home checks (cycling modem, checking connections, attempted pinging, reviewing settings) before breaking down and calling Cox.

They send out a tech today while I'm at work and plug in their own modem but, no go. Next they check our wiring and get grumpy because evidently , they've been providing cable tv to me free in addition to network connectivity. Too bad I never knew. Alas, wiring is not the issue.

Next he calls his stuporvisor and they scratch their heads for a while before deciding to check with central command to see if any work has been done at the local junction lately. Sure enough, a tech did some maintenance about the same time I lost connectivity. Gosh, maybe there's a connection.

They both go to check out the scene of the hub about a quarter mile away for an hour or two and discover, sure enough, our connection was disconnected. So, they reconnect but, still no connectivity.

Now, here's the brilliant part, the tech who did the maintenance had today off so, instead of calling him at home to find out what the hell he did at the hub, they string a quarter mile of new cable from the hub to my home. The intarwebs are restored!

My faith is renewed because all of the stupidity in the world is not centered on my work place as previously believed but, alive and well throughout the land. I believe I'll have another scotch to bolster myself for the next battle.

I find it funnier you think internet companies keep immaculate records that are continuously cross references all the time :p

They probably strung a new cable to your house because it was easier than going through all the connections in the box (time efficient) to find out what exactly happened :p

Yes, I think it's hilarious that communication company's can't

I'm sure it was easier than calling the tech to find out what the hell he did since two (supposedly trained) techs couldn't figure out their own equipment.

Depending on the contracts they have with their techs, they may not have been allowed to call them. That, or they may have to give him a set number of hours pay if they call him at home.

If two techs couldn't fix it, maybe they figured they were better off just running a new cable instead of trying to waste more time only possibly correcting what the off-duty tech did.

Why wont you answer this question? Are you afraid they are watching you now, just waiting for you to plug a TV into your free cable so they can bust you?

Save us from big companies who think operating like this is efficient or cost effective.

Lord, save us from people who accept poor work habits and waste in the name of expediency.

no, i'm sure what they did was run the cable through people's backyards, buried only half an inch if at all, so the next time neighbor joe cuts his grass magnus's intertubes will die again.

My guess would be that they have several hundred miles of conduit and it connects to every house in the area. That's how ya do it without telephone poles.

That's what came to mind when I first read the OP... :D

Seriously though, I am curious. I have Comcast in my neck of the woods. In fact, I have one of their ugly green utility boxes in the corner of my front yard. There are five or six thick-ass copper cables running up from underground to some sort of concentrator, but no conduit that I could see other than what was between the box on the side of my house and what looks to be a termination box in that same utility box.
