Hooking up Rear Speakers

I have an EPoX nForce4 motherboard with Realtek's ALC 850 codec. I am trying to get 4-channel sound; however, even with the speakers plugged in correctly (black port), and the Realtek application set to 4ch speaker the rear speakers do not work.

What I have done wrong?

I think the setup to 4-channel just means its compatible to 4 discrete channels. I think you might be a little confused about the functionality, I doubt it was set up to mirror stereo.

Whenever I get this question I have to verify one thing.

Go to Control Panel.
Open Sounds and Audio Devices.

One tab should be there called Volume.
Click it.
At the bottom of the window should be a button called "Advanced.."
Click that.
You should see a cute little picture of a computer with speakers around it.

What does yours look like?

The second question to ask is "What are you using to test the surround capabilities?"
