Hooking up 16 computers...

I'm going to be connecting theoretically a maximum of 16 computers for someone I'm helping with their network. They want to keep the cost down pretty low so what I was thinking was this:

Router/Switch setup:
Linksys 1-port router (BEFSR11) - $40
Linksys 16-Port Switch (EZXS16W) - $62

Total: $102

Router Setup:
Linksys 16-Port VPN Router (RV016) - $383

Total: $383


The first setup would work as the single router setup minus all the fancy features and stuff, correct? I'm not sure they want to spend $400 on the router, we'll see.

Also, I just grabbed these products/prices off NewEgg so there might be better deals, who knows.

unless they require VPN (virtual prive network), option #1 would be the most cost effective solution.

Personally I'd buy the 4 port router. Other than that, the router and seperate switch would be the way I would go for sure.

if it's not too much, i would suggest a 24 port switch instead for future expansion.

I agree with itr. It's extremely annoying to need 'just one more connection' and have to buy a completely new switch or hub, or disconnect something else, in order to make the connection available.

unless they are hosting a VPN server on the inside, the VPN router is not necessary - just use the switch/router

Dell has a sale on their 24-port switches right now so they are $59. Pair that with the a good router and you are set to go. 🙂

Now, I'm probably being paranoid but I would invest a little more money in an SPI router. The WRT54G and WRT54GS series has this functionality.
