Hooking home audio to PC-is this preferable? What to use?

I am thinking of a "permanent" audio solution for my computer. Can't see paying $250-500 for computer-only speakers. I was thinking of buying a cheapie receiver and some decent bookshelf speakers. Computer in basement (near noisy furnace), used primarily for music playing while browsing and gaming.

Any reccommendations on what bookshelf speakers and receiver to use?

Well, I don't have any suggestions for you but just wanted to commend you for what you're doing. Good man!

I have a SB Live, Pioneer VSX-456 Pro-logic receiver, Pioneer 200W 12" sub, and 2 JBL HLS 610's. I have honestly never heard a PC system sound any better - games, MP3s, whatever, this thing rocks. But my wife doesn't always like it. 😉

For cheap recievers, Technics, Pioneer, Kenwood, and Sony are good just to name a few.

Bookshelf = Bose 🙂

Buy whatever receiver strikes your fancy. Stay as far away from Bose as you can. There has never been a bigger marketing scam in the USA than Bose. Plenty of other manufacturers make speakers that are much, much better than Bose.

I second the anti-Bose motion. You can do far better for far less money. Some people like 'em but some people also like being spanked.

Cheap receiver - Sony, Pioneer, Kenwood, Technics are all about the same at any given price point. You'll probably be spending about $150 for a 2-channel model or about $250 for a Dolby Digital (5.1 channel) model.

Cheap speakers - there are tons of them. Just remember bigger isn't always better. Get out and listen to a bunch of different ones, find some YOU like. You can get some halfway decent speakers for about $150 or so per pair.

Dam, I just looked up some Bose reviews, and I guess those things are suck. I thought the Bose store was cool, though 😱 The speakers LOOK cool...but I guess they sound like crap. Thanks for the info, and to think I wanted one of those... 🙁.

Thanks for the info.

Any good websites for guidance on how to pick cheap receiver/cheap but good speakers? ANything like pricewatch.com for audio equipment?

I don't want to get overwhelmed with tons of audiophile info, if possible.
