Hooking electric guitar to computer

Is it possible to use my sound card as an amp? Are their programs that use the computer for distortion?

It won't sound very good.

It would be much better to output from a guitar amp (preferably Line Out, but headphone output will work). Make sure you direct the output to the Line In jack on your soundcard rather than the Microphone In.
