Matrix Trilogy - All fronts and good sub representation, no surrounds and no backs.
Annapolis - The music was good.
Pearl Harbor - It was good, just not as much as I expected, even with the DTS track.

And yet cartoons like The Incredibles and Monsters, Inc. were amazing, but that was to be expected form Pixar.

I may go into the setup and change the output levels of the surrounds and backs in relation to the fronts. I have already set the center at +1 Db. I dont know if I want to do that yet.

Pearl harbor was one of the first movies I watched when I got a good system, it was amazing with the planes coming in from behind and bullets zinging by.

Check out Saving Private Ryan, warn the neighbors first, then crank it up

Wait...you don't have a sub?
Sorry

I contemplated an SVS 15" sub, but could not justify and extra 400.

Well, SVS doesn't even make a sub with a 15" driver...but that is beside the point.

I hope you didn't pay much for that sub, because its specs are less than stellar.

Good call on the SVS sub, I cant remember what company I was thinking of. I know it has three letters (SVS, DCM, MTX, JBL) you get the idea. I paid about 1200 for the whole setup including the 16 gauge wire hooking everything up not including the sub.

Did you calibrate the rest of the system already?

(Was +1 db on the center after calibration, or was that the only calibration you did?)

I agree that the Pixar movies go above and beyond pretty much anything else I've listened to for excellent surrounds usage.

edit: wait 1200 NOT including the sub?! none of the subs that company sells really look adequate...

Can't say DCM speakers are what I would have gone with, but they are probably more than adequate and you don't have to wait for Klipsch Heritage deals to come up :)

Anyway, get AVIA or any HT setup disc...if you live in a house go buy a Radio Shack analog SPL meter....I think they are still about $30.

Set your speakers with those tools and enjoy.

If you have 'burned' movies that could also be the problem. Stick to original discs for quality enjoyment :)

You may not be able to watch them at will, but for $3-4 at blockbuster/hollywood/netflix it's way better IMHO

BTW SVS is a great room shaker...however, not the most accurate sub by far.

Different strokes for different folks though.
