Hook up Microsoft Digital Sound System 80 to a CD player?

I love these speakers, but I have one question.

I was even thinking about hooking them up to a CD player and have a much cheaper "bookshelf" system... After all, it is an 80 watt system that produces excellent quality sound.

Would I need a CD player only or both a CD player and a reciever? Has anybody tried this out? Do you like the setup?

very easy to do, connect your headphone jack to the 1/8 inch input on the sub, no receiver needed.

How would the sound quality be like then?
