Hong Kong Dwellers, Help Needed

Hi all, I was wondering whether any of you are up to speed on monitors?

I've read loads of reviews on monitors, in particular 19' CRT's.

I can't believe the price of the Mitsubishi Plus 91, it retails for hkd6000 but in the UK it's under 400pounds, beautiful monitor though. Thought about getting a Topcon 19' with diamondtron flat tube for hkd2700, but have my doubts.

Do they sell the Samsung 955DF or the 900NF here in HK as I know many of our US friends have raved about these monitors? All I can find from Samsung are the 900SL and 900IFT. If so please direct me to a place I can buy from.

Also are there any places where I can see hardware demonstrations as it seems nearly all shops are small with little or no service.

Anybody feel like they're in a flea market when strolling in GoldenComputer centre? Thanks for any suggestions.😀

Flea market?!?!?! :| It's HOME!!! It's heaven!!! Ahem....😉

Mitsubishi Plus 91 goes for HK$5980...that's about right.

I will say one thing though. With space at a premium here in HK, larger monitors are going to be less common/less popular. Good luck trying to carry a 19inch monitor home, is all I can say...😉

The only Samsung monitor that I have seen is the 900IFT which goes for HK$3680. They do have the 755DF though.

Videocom (1st floor, ShumShuiPo (Golden Computer Centre)) is one of the largest stores....although they don't explicitly list the 955DF model, they do have the 755DF and 753DF models, and I am sure that you can ask them to get the 955DF in for you.

What particular hardware demonstrations are you after? Generally if it is not on display, no demo, unless you REALLY know the owners/salespeople in the shop VERY well, you are a regular customer and they are having a quiet day.

The thing that you MUST do in HK when buying hardware is to have done all the homework BEFORE you go to buy.

Thanks for the info, AndyHui, always nice to know that even pop stars reply to the likes of myself,Hehe🙂

But seriously, good point about space premium in HK, I just thought that people in HK were accepting LCD's as the standard now - see even the traditional herb shop now sports nice IBM LCD's?

Maybe it's the convenience of going to a single shopping mall in HK with all the comp. goods that mail order hasn't picked up like other parts of the world.

What's your favourite, most reliable computer retailer in HK, for prices and return policy? Seems esp. important for monitors. Thanks again. Can I have your autograph?😉

Since I live on the island side, I don't frequent SSP/Golden and the MongKok computer zones all that often.

My most frequent haunt is Wanchai 298. The shop that I buy from is P@radise Computers located on the 1st floor. Been buying from them for several years now. You can't go wrong with them. Chris Wong, Kelvin and Canny are great people...they should be able to fix you up.

Return policy is about the same for most computer shops. Any failure or problems, return in 7 days for a replacement.

Mail order is not that convenient in HK for several reasons....I don't think I will bother going through most of them, since they are the same reasons why e-commerce doesn't work too well in HK.

Not really. There are a few members here from HK who are pretty proficient and should be able to answer most of your needs. It's just a matter of time before they all start to turn up in this thread.

gnoymyguy,

Andy just PM'd me about your question 🙂

Call this number 2370 2636 and speak to Samsung HK direct about legitimate imported models etc - they have a nice showroom out at Kwai Chung also.

If you want to call me (2618-0536) I can tell u about my experiences with Samsung monitors - I have the 900IFT

I also noticed that back home (Scotland) you can get cheaper 19" monitors too

I'm not associated with Samsung in anyway....just another "see lai" in HK 🙂

Topcon "can be" good monitors but there are some lesser quality examples floating about.

Hi gtd 2000, thanks for joining in, I've just phoned the number for Samsung HK, they informed me that there should be the 955DF and 900NF available in some places but rare as these models are for oem or something (didn't fully understand😱), anyway if I can't find them I'll go for the 900IFT.

Now for something completely different- are the athlon 133fsb cpu's available yet? Saw them some time back briefly, but not since.

Be sure to see the monitor you buy in action - flat screens can have geometry issues!

Don't just look at the nice display picture image on the screen this will not demonstrate any geometry problems!
Also check for "moire" pattern problems.

Make sure you see the monitor with horizontal lines displayed as this is the only way to tell if it has any geometry problems!

Samsung HK customer service is very good - so if you have any problems they will sort out the problem.

<< they informed me that there should be the 955DF and 900NF available in some places but rare as these models are for oem or something >>

Basically they probably mean they don't import them in quantity for HK retail consumers - although they can be obtained elsewhere.

Saw Samsung 900NF and 1200NF available for sale(just brochure material, official imports) in Golden last Sunday. The 1200NF was selling for $8600(Centralfield)/$8300(Wing Ming). Don't know the price of 900NF.

About the Mitsubishi mon, I think they are overpriced in Hong Kong(compare to other parts of the world), due to the pricing policy of the distributor. And the Topcon mon......I would say avoid them unless you really need a large screen mon with very limited budget. (My former company use Topcon mon exclusively, due to its low price).

Hi,I bought a mag 810fd 19"a couple of months back from the Golden Computer centre for about $4000. Its a pretty sweet tube when it works it. Died the first night I had it if you think it is a delight taking a 19" mon in a taxi wait till you have to return it the same way the next day.
The MB on it also died over Chinese New Year which was delightful timing as I had work due. I had to go and buy a 17" sony to tide me over. The upside is im using both now 😎
Cheers Craig

A very good 19" you can buy in Hong Kong which doesn't cost u an arm and a leg is Philips 109P. It is about HK$4500, with BNC input or Lightframe (don't ask me on that I dunno much 😀) Its quality rivals that of Sony G400.

SatorE, didn't you have the free delivery option or you couldn't wait?

What warranty did you get with the Mag and the Sony?

I don't fancy lugging a 50+pound beast all the way back to NT where I live.

Samsung has 3 year warranty - first two on site!
19' to/from Tuen Mun is pretty far! 🙂
Make sure you have on-site!
You know it makes sense!

I remember when I bought my monitor (17inch) in Mong Kok computer centre, I just asked them if they could deliver it for me. They said yes, and it was through my front door 2 days later! 😉

I did have a free delivery option but it was when I first arrived and were staying in a hotel in Mong Kok and we were about to move to Chung Hom Kok. My excuse for setting up the pc in the hotel was that if I had any hardware problems I wouldnt have to come all the way out from Chung Hom Kok. Its not that Im a sad pc addict at all, honest😀 I have 3yr hardware warranty with the first year on site for the Mag and a 3 yr warratny on the sony. Both great pictures ( when they work)

Would they put a PC together for me in top condition? I would likely buy most of the parts elsewhere 😉 using hkgolden.com to find the best prices.

14k: P@radise will put together a top machine for you. Prices differ only by a few dollars each way. Buying the cheapest components separately, one at each shop, is not going to end up cheaper than buying the whole lot from one place. P@radise's prices, although not the cheapest (again, only a few HK dollars in it) will buy you a properly constructed system....if you ask Canny nicely, she'll probably be able to price match in most cases too. Also think of the time and transport money that you will save buying from a single shop.

whao, what's up with the HK threads going on.... 🙂

anyhow, I like the Maginnovision, one model line uses the sony FD tube, it looks great and is cheap. not sure about the price...

and Paradise IS SUCK! they didn't hire me and I went to them 3 times!!!! 😛
actually, Paradise is NOTICABLLY better than the rest of the pack, honest ppl, good price, knowledgable staff (I should have been one of them).

however, rent in 298 is higher, so Paradise is inevitablely a bit more expensive than Sham Shui Po, but finding another "paradise" in SSP will be a problem.

VideoCom is pretty good, despite they reject me and Ahfung's great plan of selling Orbs become they are came out 🙂
VideoCom is located in MongKok (top floor), SSP, and Wan Chai too.

Hahhaa, Andy Law, they are not suck, you are, hhehehe..... just kidding. I thought you are in the states now, you mean you tried to work for them when you were back in HK? That's cool.

I only talked to Kelvin when I was buying all those machines. He gave me quite a bit of info (honest info) and they setup the machines nicely and tested everything before giving the machine to you.

I live on the island as well, and if you ask, the money I use for transportation, and the effort I need to transport the machine from SSP to the island side will be way more than the extra cost I pay for Paradise. That's why I'd rather stick with them.

BTW, they have a webpage, AndyHui, you have it? Maybe you can post it here and let people take a look.

Hmm.... I am just wondering if someone from Paradise is actually reading AnandTech or read the forum. Hey, if you are one of them, sign in!
