We did a 7-day Western Caribbean cruise on Royal Caribbean. The cruise left from San Juan, PR so we went down a few days early and stayed at a nice hotel for some sight-seeing beforehand. The ports of call on the cruise were Aruba, Curacao, St. Martin and St. Thomas.

Would definitely go again.

EDIT: Our honeymoon cruise was end of November/beginning of December. We did another cruise with the kids that was in July and it wasn't crazy hot or humid.

If you do all inclusive, do high end or don't do it. Suck having pre-paid for food and finding out its lousy. We've done Sandals a few times and they generally have been pretty nice. Just did Barbados this winter and the island was nice too. It has its own economy aside from tourism so you don't get the whole clingy feeling like you do on many caribbean islands. Other Sandals we did were in Jamaica. Those are the cheaper ones, but there isn't a lot of call to go outside the resort. I've done all inclusives in Cozumel as well, The Aura was nice when we went there. Its a secrets now so I'm not sure how it's changed. The Fiesta Americana all inclusive there was disappointing.

Hard to recommend something without knowing duration for cost, and what you're into. I'd suggest 2 weeks at least if you can swing it.

We are looking for something that's all inclusive preferably but we are also going in early July.
Thanks!

Just saw this. In July I'd really avoid the caribbean. Sweaty. Ugg. I'd look into something more temperate. We did a Baltic cruise around then that was fantastic. Bit more active though.

The Caribbean is the same temperature all year. The only major changes are the times the sun rises and sets, rainy vs dry season, and hurricane season.

False. I've been in July and it was oppressive. It doesn't vary as much as up north, but it is substantially warmer and depending on where you go, more humid in the summer. Its probably the humidity more than the 10 degree swing that changes the feel though.

St Lucia - Ladera Resort

Cool. We did St Lucia last spring. Went with Sandals though. That place looks cool being right in the Pitons. Prices looks pretty insane, and they don't even include lunch/dinner.

St. Lucia is nice, we stayed at the Sandals La Toc. We went over the Grande for a day to mess around. My personal preference would be the Grande. Beach is nicer, waves are much calmer, it's closer to other activities and most of the restaurants seemed to be a little better. La Toc was definitely an older resort and it showed it places. Plus the waves there were pretty brutal most days...red flags almost every day we were there. La Toc has a very nice French restaurant that is it's major claim and it's also a golf resort if that's your thing.

Nice thing about Sandals is that they are really all inclusive. You pay for nothing (except internet access... $40 for a week). Otherwise snorkeling is free, they'll take you diving if you want to do that, you can eat and drink yourself stupid if you want (although I'm certain the hard alcohol is watered down considerably).

If you do St Lucia...you *have* to do a Joe Knows tour. Bring your drinking hat, you'll need it. :)

The zip line tour was also quite popular, but we didn't get a chance to do that.

This is worthless unless we know where we're talking about. I was born, grew up, and live in Trinidad and Tobago. Even though Tobago is 20 miles to the north east of Trinidad, on average it is a degree or two cooler during the day than Trinidad. However, on both islands the temperature fluctuates by an average of about 2°C over the course of a year.

We went to Norway for two weeks, at the same time of year. Spent most of it hiking between cabins and otherwise running around the countryside. I call the cabin trekking "luxury backpacking because you only need to have day food, clothes, and a sleep sack on you. Everything else (shelter, meals, etc.) is supplied by the cabins. I really recommend Jotunheimen and Aurlandsdalen. Plan on spending a few days in Oslo, stop by the DNT office to ask for advice on where to go, rent a car and have fun. Outside of Oslo, you don't really need to plan your trip. The cabins guarantee you'll have somewhere to stay. A couple tips to save money:

  • A lot of commercial camping sites have cabins that they rent out for about $40/night, and they come with a kitchenette. Food and lodging are generally expensive there, so that will help. We did this pretty much the entire time we weren't either hiking or in Oslo.
  • If you're more rugged, you're allowed to stay on any land that isn't being farmed and isn't near a house. It's an old common law thing, and it means that you can always just pull over and camp. That also includes the National Parks
  • Alcohol is unbelievably expensive. You're best of getting a bottle of Scotch duty-free and taking it with you as you travel. If you're meeting up with anyone you know in the country, get them something nice to drink. Odds are they haven't had anything in a while.

St lucia is nice. Sandals has free internet in their lounge wherever that is. If you want wifi elsewhere on the property you pay. I wouldn't do it personally. I had it last time and found myself fiddling with my phone the whole time instead of locking it in the safe and enjoying where we were. The other thing if you stay at a Sandals at a location with more than one nearby (like St Lucia) is you have right as the other resorts so can try out their beach and restaurants. They usually provide a free shuttle between them.

All very interesting. The Sandals Barbados had caught our eye, but we are nervous about it being July and hot. The temp graph confirms what we already suspected too.

The Ladera resort linked above looks very interesting. I'll have to check it out a bit. We might be able to stretch the budget a bit to make that fit....
