the matrix is so hyped because it is the starwars of our generation and of all the philisophical ideas contained in it.. people have written essays and thesis on the movie and the world of the matrix... and dirty harry would make me about as excited as jumping into a vat of acid....

People have written essays and theses about Britney Spears, Eminem, and the Simpsons.

What's your point?

I can't answer for Glitchny directly, but the point is there is a certain depth to the Matrix that isn't found in many other movies. The sheer amount of possibilities that exist make the series very interesting. Because of all the different things that could happen, people are very excited about seeing the sequel. This is why we are seeing all the hype.

Oh yeah, because the average person goes to see movies for its depth, rather than to see creative new ways of blowing things up

"Blowing things up" is certainly part of it. But total action movies are generally not as successful or hyped as movies that combine depth/drama with action.

You are not alone

The Matrix was only impressive to people ignorant and unaware of GITH and everything else that the brothers put in this cheap sugary mix for the American public. And the obious attracction for the geeks isthe fatasy of transforming from a lonely weirdo into a Superman overmight.

It won't be spiderman by a longshot.

Honestly, can't we all agree that the Matrix was something new and refreshing when it came out. Also, it was a hit for the simple fact that the effects were mimicked and duplicate in everything from the Simpsons to cell phone commericals. (Hollywood rarely has anything new come from itself.)

I liked it because I liked the Agent Smith character. And compared to the Star Wars movie that came out in the same year, Lucas was shown up in terms of style and storytelling (something I never thought possible). I do wonder how, if at all, they will be able to top their previous work. I've seen the extended trailers for this new one and I do have a few questions (time&space)- but I'll save those until some have seen the movie.

I do like the Animatrix episodes titled, "The Second Renaissance." The imagery and story have stuck with me today, as I saw part II yesterday afternoon. I think for what they accomplished, you couldn't have told that story with live action movie. But as for the two other animatrix episodes, I could have done without them.

So yes, some people couldn't care less about the new movie. I am going this Sunday to the Varsity to catch the Cowboy Bebop movie that has come to town. I'll wait for the crowd to die down before I catch this new Matrix (but only by a couple of days, tho. )

Some people keep citing the philosophy and other themes of the Matrix as if it were something that makes it somewhat unique from other Sci-fi films. Yet many sci-fi films have dealt with this same theme in the past - most notably, Dark City dealt with almost the EXACT same theme and story the year prior to The Matrix's release. Yes, there are slight differences in details here or there, but the overall plot and underlying premise are virtually the same yet the Matrix is by far the more popular film even though Dark City was widely praised and presented a nearly identical story the year before.

The only major difference between the two films IMO was in their approach. Dark City had a much darker, brooding, film noir approach with the vast majority of the film's running time focusing on John's quest to discover the truth and only minimal time spent on preparation and action to overthrow the oppressors. The Matrix on the other hand had a much lighter, more dynamic, action film-oriented feel with relatively less time focused on Neo's quest to find the broader truth and more time focused on preparation and action to overthrow their oppressors. I personally preferred the style and the slower-paced way the story was presented in Dark City more (as you can probably tell by now), but the Matrix also does a good job as well and is an enjoyable film. I'm curious to see what the story in the sequel will be like. I have no doubts it'll do fantastic at the box office, but what major summer release these days doesn't?

Watched the 'Dateline Special' last night about the matrix. Looks so freakin sweat. They had to build a complete freeway just for the 18 minute car chase.

i disagree. many of the most successful movies in hollywood are those that contain "deep" plotlines in addition to stunning visual effects. and realize that "blowing things up" and visual effects are not one in the same.

even still is the fact that many movies are successful only for their depth. can you think of any successful movies known only for "blowing things up"

Armageddon :)

Matrix is alright. My wife and I watched last night and after seeing it the second time around I was
laughing a couple of times at cheezy-ness of some of it. I think it would have been better with another
actor to play Neo.

Over all though, it is entertaining and I'll be seeing the sequel.
