Just looking for advice. Would either choice be as good as the other? $65 difference.

Sorry for the topic, but I searched for something similar and turned up nothing. I know you guys hate these topics so I'll close it once I get some answers. And, if you can manage, no benchmarks. Just tell me what you know from what you've read or from personal experience. Thanks.
 
The X800XT is much more powerful (should be compared to a 6800ULTRA instead, and where the hell did you find an X800XT for 455 bucks), the X800PRO is more on par with the 6800GT. I'm a Radeon fan, but nVidia will be a bit ahead (IN MY HONEST OPINION SO DON'T BE HATIN) with all their new stuff (SLI, PCIe, etc).
 
The best value was probably the $350 6800GT or 6800LE, both of which clock up to Ultra speeds.

The BBA X800PRO VIVOs were also a good value at $399, considering they were flashable to XT speeds at minimum, and PE speeds 50% of the time.
 
I use price watch and got my x800xt when it was $ 462

Put an ati silencer 4 on it and have had it up to 550 / 1150 stable (looks like it could have gone higher but I didn't push it) but usually keep it around xt pe levels.

Great card, worth it in my book.

A couple of things I forgot to mention are:

- The x800xt is not as long as the 6800gt hence if you have space issues this works out for the better
- Unlike my 6800gt card you can use a pass through power cable so say you just hook off the power
coming off your harddrive or whatever. I don't know if everyones 6800gt was like this, but mine really wanted a dedicated molex power cord. I mean this by I would have random problems until I gave the card its dedicated power and all of a sudden the problems vanished.
- Heat issues appear to be about the same to me. My card doesn't get over 60c so I am happy.

Both are good cards and will serve you well, which ever one you end up getting.

(My wife is currently using the 6800gt in her machine , mostly for the SIMS 2 for all things...I know..I know. Don't throw any rocks at me please.)
 
The X800XT (as longs as it's a PE) for sure.

For only $65 more, you get the best card out there currently aside from the phantom 6800 Ultra Extreme.

That's a tough nut to crack. If I had the $65 free and clear I'd say the XT. You might also consider a 6800 Ultra if you're going to pork out that much for an XT

 
Personally I don't think it is worth $65 more, but if you have plenty of extra cash go for it. Either card is amazing.
 
It depends on what you want a high-end card for. If it is gaming, get the 6800GT. If it is for a Home Theatre PC or video editing, I would get the X800.
 
I've got the money(What is $65 when you're speding $1497?), and my current setup is 7 years old, so I'm going with the X800XT. I realize the 6800GT is the better deal, but with a 7 year old rig, I just want the best.

And, yes, I agree with the idea that in the long run, the 6800 Ultra or 6800GT with overclocking would probably be better.

EDIT: And even building a rig depends on authorization from my parents(Dad games but knows nothing about computers. If we do wind up building, we're splitting the cost), which I "got" last March. They never went through with it.
 
You'll be happier buying at the top of the curve. It'll take take just that much longer before it becomes an issue again.
 
If you've "got the money" and are looking for a graphics card to last you a while, I'd say wait for SLI GTs or Ultras.

1. Will be faster at everything.
2. Has DX9c feature set X800XT lacks that is current MS standard
 
While nVidia has the edge in drivers the extra speed of the X800 XT can't be ignored. It's a tough call but I'd probably give the nod to ATi on this one.

However, might I suggest a third card: 6800U?

Chances are that for the most part, the gaming experience will be equal in most games. The thing is 6800Gt will be much faster in Doom 3.

For the $$$ it is not worth it to spend extra to get X800Xt, especially since 6800GTs can be found for much less than $390.

I would conclude that X800xt is faster, but we aren't talking about noticeable performance improvements.

If you do intend to keep this setup for a while, and you are replacing the whole rig, it might be worth it to wait for the Nforce 4 SLI setup. Even without it, in the next 2-3 years, chances are you'll encounter quite a few games using Doom 3 engine and that is when 6800 will be faster. As far as Direct3D games, ATI will be faster pretty much most of the time, but the difference will be much less than with doom3-engine-based games. You probably also know that in any game where there are a lot of complex shadows (ie Doom 3) and so on, Nvidia will be faster too.

I dont think lack PS3.0 is that much of an issue, except for HDR lighting if that interests you. Maybe ATI will incorporate 3Dc soon?

Either way, in 2 years both cards will run the latest games at 20 vs. 30 frames just like 9800Pro does at Far Cry and Doom 3 right now. So if I was you, i'd actually try to save $$$$ and buy something mid-high end now and upgrade in the next 2 years and so on...instead of putting down $500+ towards a card now that is maybe 25% faster than the next $350 offering but both of which will be inadequate in 2 years. If you put $150 towards the next upgrade next time you buy a $350 card, it'll only cost you $200 extra.
