ok, pretty much everyone who knows anythign about computers hates AOL.

I personally have my issues cause I worked as a help desk support person for 1.5 years and 90% of our problems correlated to stupid AOL hijacking the internet connection and preventing lan connections etc etc etc. of course i can think of numerous more problems with AOL.

but in all honesty. lets say I, zimu, buy AOL and ask ATOT "so guys, i'm going to make a new plan JUST for you guys who know about computers. WHAT DO YOU WANT??"

skip the obvious stuff. i.e. "big bandwidth" doesn't cut it.

Isn't that the point of AOL, it's like training wheels for the Internet.

Besides what doesn't AOL have that you can't find on the rest of the Internet?

I haven't use AOL since around the early to mid '90s.

AOL is better than it used to be. Version 6...*shudder*. I haven't had any problems with it other than it crashing itself (albeit not the rest of the computer). So, I guess write the program using a good multi-threaded model.

Stop sending out CDs (which ends up in landfill) and stop offering stuff whenever the user logs on.

if they offered a client-less internet connection it'd be ok. with routers or even 56k routers (yes, these exist), i never want to see any "internet connection" software period.

i hate the sbc-yahoo dsl crap. even if i had only one pc, i'd hook up the router.

What is the best way to resolve this? I think my company is on their blacklist for some reason.

you can connect to aol without the client....
get the phone number, username is xx@aol.com, password is your password. dial up networking does it.

it's good for people who don't know jack about the internet.

For AOL to become "good" to people who don't fall into that category they'd have to be a pure ISP. Provide blistering speed for a cheaper price than any other DSL providers. But that ain't never going happen.

Depends. How is your mail hosted? Local exchange server? Offsite? Other?

i know this sort of defeats the purpose of AOL, but in order for it to become "good", they'd have to stop trying to do anything and everything and just provide a f*cking internet connection with an email service. i hate all that garish bloat.

It would require that AOL have at least 1.5 Mbit down with 0.5 Mbit up available without having to use proprietary, resource-hogging software. In other words, it should be configureable with just your OS's built-in networking connections. Also, they should have 3 Mbit up/down available for those who want it.

The biggest problem I have with AOL is that their software is junk. All I need is an internet connection. Their 50+ MB of non-value-adding software needs to get the old heave-ho.

funny, i had that free 40 day trial from them. i called after 40 days, said i was unsatisfied and wanted to get rid of my SN. they extended it. i repeated the above.

now, 15 months later and not a penny towards AOL, i am closing my account for good because i'm leaving the country, otherwise i'd just say i was dissatisfied and probably get a couple of extra months for free.

classic. they're desperate.

Ok, there are lots of things that could be causing the problem. Read
this newsgroup thread for some ideas.

They need a younger female sex symbol than Sharon Stone in their TV ads for one thing.. lol
I'm no analyst, but isn't her career in it's dying phase.. what does that say about the phase AOL is in... Is their marketing CRAP? or am i mis-interpreting it?

How about Kristen Kruek or some other hottie :p
