Honestly guys...Steam's pretty awesome

If anyone still hates Steam, could you please tell me why? Every time I open it to play a game I'm more and more impressed. It started off as just a simple way to distribute and update HL2, and now it's a full-blown store for dozens of developers. I was so surprised to see COD and COD2 and Prey all on there. Valve must be making some sweet additional revenue from all that. And it's so great because it's completely hassle and worry-free (not to mention extremely convenient) for the consumer. Especially with upcoming overhauls like the new multi-core-aware Source engine.

Honestly, who needs retail game purchases anymore?

(This is more a discussion of online vs. retail game purchasing so I hope it can stay in OT.)

I'd agree with this. Especially when you have to reload it with just your user name and password and it redownloads everything.

I really hate to agree with you, but you're right. The problem is that I hated steam so much for so long, that I'm just not ready to get over it, so could we please just not talk about it?

It's horrible. It's like they have no one working there. The friends list hasn't worked for like 2 years, and it still won't keep my favorite servers intact, and/or I can't get rid of the ones I don't want to be there. When you try to mute one player it mutes 2 other random people at the same time for no reason. I'm not judging them for providing games, they're just horrible at making/managing the game browser. It's like they haven't tried to fix anything. I had to buy a new router just to be able to play stuff online with it, using my old one I couldn't get on for a long arse time.

The friends system has been working for a while now.

<raises hand> I still hate it! It makes reboots that much more painful--and I'm not a "PC always on" kinda guy.

I liked it since day one except the lists disappearing.

The auto updates and the messages when you first login are a huge helP!

I'm totally with you on the digital delivery aspect. I am so over retail purchases. I use direct2drive all the time. Just wish their selection was as good as a regular online store. But it's not that bad.

Well let me start off by saying that STEAM really screwed me over several years ago twice. First off I still had 56k when it came out and you CANNOT play with 56k on STEAM no matter what they try to say its jsut impossible, ping when from 250 to 500-1000. So STEAM made me have to quit playing CS and DOD for 6 months till I went to college where they had broadband. Also, STEAM decided to ban one of my accounts for no reason and Valve jsut doesnt want to admit that this has ever happened, it was no big deal I paid 10$ and got another copy, but it still is pretty annoying and cost me time and money. However, despite the fact that I CANNOT ever like STEAM I will have to say that it has helped me several times as well. MY hard drive has died twice in the last 2 months (2 hard drives in 2 months dead sux ass btw). However downloading games over STEAM is very simple, and much easier than keeping the game CDs which i have lost now anyways.

It's great for me because one of the files on my HL2 install CDs are corrupt. I just spent a day redownloading, and burnt the files to a DVD for backup.

Unfortunately, CS Source keeps crashing, and I lose control of my computer, so I have to hard reset.

I've had no problems with Steam. Cooks things very nicely....

OH, THAT steam. No problems there either. I like getting patches/updates automatically, instead of having to hunt around for them on various gaming sites. More game companies should do this.

Agreed. Same here.

:(

edit: except for the whole randomly-functioning (ie, not when you really want it) favorite servers list...friends list is nice and fun, too.

Have to agree. I absolutely hated Steam with a passion in the early days but I love it now, it's great. The only major issue I have with it is the crappy media player when you download trailers. I wish it would just download normal mpeg files. And Adaman, FYI the Friends list has been working for many months now.

I can't get connected with a buddy of mine, maybe we don't have the right ports open for it or something like that, but it seems like it should be working. We just paste the IP of the server we're playing in Trillian, which isn't too bad.

I've had horrible problems with Steam and hate it with a passion, but obviously it works well for most people. Though if you go to the Steam forums, you'll find a lot of people (yes, some idiots) who are having major issues with steam and have been for a long time. There has been so many different occasions where Steam has denied me to play the game I own and want to play, that's what ticks me off the most, it shouldn't be capable of doing that.

I remember on very chilly mornings in Manhattan the steam coming from the grates in the road was quite awesome. :p
