Honestly, do you think the ballots in florida are really that confusing?

Its as simple as

BUSH/Cheney->
<-Buchanan
Gore/Lieberman->

maybe they should add another option
<-Here if you're stupid and don't know which hole to punch.

Heifetz

P.S, I actually don't think it requires a lot of BRAIN POWER to punch the right hole.......I think my dog can do it if its trained to read.

I don't understand the call to make the ballots "simpler" So that no matter how smart you are, you're voice can still be heard. Frankly, if you can't understand how to punch the right hole for your candidate, I don't understand how you can understand and voice your opinion on deficit spending, progressive tax, or any other domestic and foreign affairs.

The "stupidity" is that 19,000 where disqualified, 20% of the Reform votes were cast there and 50% of the Socialist vote and the "desperate" right-wingers would rather put thier agenda ahead of the truth and good of america. Something is/was very wrong there and it warrants looking into. There were reports of confusion from the very beggining, this isnt a ploy, this isnt a conspiresy its a wierd anomoly that needs to be looked at.

Obviously it can be a mistake if they voted for the wrong person, but they had the opportunity to get a new ballot and vote again!

If you're talking about the 17,000 double vote ballots, there seems to be a history of these "double vote" ballots. So I don't think its anything special, as the Democrats are trying to make, in this election.

Heifetz

Shuxclams: The desperate right wingers? The Republicans had NO HAND in this situation WHATSOEVER. Its not their fault that some of Florida's citizens decided to vote for two different candidates. How can you possibly REVOTE those votes just because the election has come down to Florida?!?

All I can say is I wasn't confused.

Question: these lawsuits from people saying they punched the wrong one because it was confusing... ballots are anonymous, right? So what stops someone who did correctly vote one way claiming they were confused and voted wrong? Or is the purpose of the lawsuits to have a re-vote?

It was confusing enough to 4% of the Palm Beach voters. Which is around 20X the number of vote-difference.

Shux, you seem to forget that in the last election (ie BEFORE they 'redesigned' the ballot) around 16,000 ballots in that county were tossed out for the exact same reason. In other words, it has nothing to do with the ballot, and everything to do with the stupidity of those casting them.

Pennstate: What does it matter what percentage of the people it was confusing to? What if 10% of the voters in that county are morons? Do we then automatically assume that if 10% of the votes are disqualified, it must be the ballot?? Again, it happened the same way last election, with a different ballot. What was the excuse then?

Tagej,
Will the rest of the world wonder if those votes should have counted? Should the republikans be comfortable with this? I question this all, I am not making a call just an observation.

I have no way of knowing for sure. I'm not a senior citizen and I wasn't in the election booth in Palm Beach County to see the actual ballots, the machines that were used, or the people working the voting booths.

but you forget the reason it is alright to keep disqualified votes that way.. it doesn't matter unless the race is tight. If the race isn't tight, no one has to bother checking those votes.

I don't think there is any reason to reconsider the disqualified votes... even if the election was tight.

They looked somewhat confusing, but not too bad (nothing I can't handle ;)). But, the fact that 19k were double-punched and such inicates there is a real problem with the ballot, doesn't it? Was this the first year out for this type of ballot? I've never heard about the problem before.

Well, I don't think the ballots are confusing enough to me....that I would have voted for wrong person...

But I do see where it's much easier to vote for Bush correctly, than Gore correctly.

And a lot of folks have complained (even before results were known) that the ballot was confusing to THEM.

So, if it was confusing to a lot, then it was confusing.....but, keep in mind intelligence is NOT a requirement to vote!

Yeah,
it's only confusing after the elections,
when you find out that it's a close race that your candidate is going to lose.

I saw the picture of that and I was confused because it doesn't look even remotely confusing.
They're just all senile.

And I am also want to congratulate all of you that had a high enough IQ not to have made a mistake. You should be very proud. In fact, I can send you a plaque saying "I am voted correctly, and I am damn smart because of it".

it is not confusing to someone with anywhere near a 100 IQ. This is why the electoral college exists.... to protect from the stupidity of the masses.

Let me repeat....

Intelligence is NOT a requirement for voting.....
(this could be a whole new discussion) :)

The only legitimate concern, and it's terribly remote at that, is that the ballot was too confusing so that people punched Buchanan instead of Gore then realized their mistake after they submitted their ballot. At most, assuming ZERO people wanted to vote for Buchanan in Palm Beach County, that's 3,000 people. Since over 5,000 people (could be 8,000 -- anyone have exact numbers?) voted for Buchanan in 1996, it's certainly NOT zero.

The 19,000 double-punched tickets are an entirely different issue. With the first ballots, above, the people could submit their ballot and THEN realize that they made a mistake, presumably. This means that they were careless when they case their vote and are making a guess as to how they voted. In any event, the 19,000 ballots WERE OBVIOUSLY DOUBLE PUNCHED AND THERE IS NO WAY ON GOD'S GREEN EARTH THAT THEY [the voters] DID NOT REALIZE THEY PUNCHED TWO HOLES. So, they made an obvious mistake and did nothing to correct it, giving them the benefit of the doubt that it was a mistake. It was entirely within their grasp to correct that obvious and known mistake prior to submitting their ballot, and they did not. Now that Gore is losing by a small margin, they want to re-vote. It does not work that way.

They punched two holes. So what. Maybe they changed their mind just after voting for someone else. So what. Now that they're retallying the votes, it doesn't make a difference. They screwed up and it's no one's fault but theirs. Should the rest of us be penalized 'cuz they're stoopid?
