Honda, Toyota missing from Hybrid car event

What do you guys think of this? Mighty shady job by the prez, not that I'm surprised...

In any case, smart money's still gonna be on Honda and Toyota for quality, not to mention fuel efficiency. I guess Bush just didn't want the American manufacturers to be thouroughly trouced by the mere fact that Honda and Toyota 's got hybrids ready to go and the rest are two years behind...

Still disgusting though. But hey, as long as the consumers do their research, it won't matter who he supports..

<< Asked if he thought that omitting Toyota and Honda was an oversight, Bartlett said: "I really can't comment, not without having all the facts."

Ed Cohen, vice president of Honda North America, told CNN he first heard of the hybrid car event on Friday and called the White House's Council on Environmental Quality seeking someone to talk to about participating in the event, but was unable to reach anyone. Cohen said he left a message but no one from the White House called back.

Can you imagine how guarded those freaking cars were and how thoroughly they were inspected before they set those suckers down on the South Lawn?! :Q

home field advantage . not a smart move again by Mr. Prez and his team.

why not? politically it doesn't hurt him, and if it helps US based automakers a little bit, there's nothin wrong with that.

maybe there's nothing wrong with just this event. but favoring domestic carmakers rather than foreign ones that are creating better
and more innovative products is never good in the long run. it creates complacency and crappy products that catches up with you, these companies think that if they screw up someone will bail them out.

LMFAO..

I don't know why, but opening that article up and seeing that picture of Bush peering into the engine compartment of that car just made me bust up.. Look at the expression on his face, it looks like he's going.. "What the hell is that?"

LMAO.. *wipes tears*..

The question came up in the white house press conference this morning and Ari said that it was organized by the domestic car manufacturer society (or some such org), so it was not up to the white house to decide who was there.

So there's collusion going on huh... That *IS* a sign of fear... 😀

Considering that most of the cars and trucks that Honda and Toyota sell are made here in the US by US workers, I think that they should have been given a chance.

Hell, the Americans are building most of their cars in Mexico and Canada...

They should have been included. It would have been hilarious if Dubaya mentioned the availablity of the hybrids: "Yes, these cars will soon be on the road in less than 18 months. Uh, ya, uh, these cars are already and have been available for some time now."

The bottom line is that the American cars are just not as good as the Toyotas or Hondas. They have a lot of work to do before they ever catch up.

That doesn;t surprise me in the least. The president never makes a move that appears to support foriegn business. That's why their limo's are always American and federal employees have to use American based airlines when flying for work.

I guess he should mention that the Chrysler Town and Country that they showed is made in Canada then 🙂

<< Way to get your panties in a bunch over a little issue, great job guys! >>

This is NOT a little issue.

This is leaving out the two BIG players that STARTED the whole damn industry and put the first two hybrids on the market.

It is a little issue. This was a little event with three cars on the whitehouse lawn. The idea that Bush himself was in charge of inviting specific companies is laughable imho, he's not that kind of micromanager. Even if it were direct and intentional why is it such a big deal to assist domestic car companies? Regardless of the issue of globalization, it is the administration's job first and foremost to benefit the U.S. in whatever way possible.

While it is true that Honda/Toyota put the first hybrid vehicles to market, the development of hybrid vehicles has been a long time coming. The effort can't really be attributed singularly to two companies, seeing as university and other government funded research in the area has been going on for a while now.

You can't help companies that can't even help themselves. There is NO innovation from Detroit in the car business (now the truck industry is different). Japan soundly tramples Detroit in this respect.

If it's all about "helping the domestic automakers," maybe we should cut out all foreign car companies from the Los Angeles, Detroit, and Chicago auto shows??!! Yeah right! This "little" event at the White House gets exposure all over the place. TV, paper, etc. If people were to see that you can get 54 MPG+ in a Honda hybrid, don't you think that that would be a big deal? People are sheep. And how is it helping domestic automakers? You can't even BUY the damn things yet😉 By the time Detroit unleashes their 1st gen hybrids, Honda and Toyota will be releasing their 2nd generation.

As for the development of the hybrid, maybe in the US, but the Japanese designed and researched the hybrids in Japan. It has nothing to do with the government and education here.

Honda and Toyota have been selling these hybrids here for the past TWO YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And they have a Hybrid Civic coming out this spring. The domestics won't be out for another 18 months, if at all.

Honda and Toyota got bent over, and that's a FACT!

NFS4 - thanks for bringing some objectivity in this... People are so blinded by this whole "buy American" BS that they fail to realize that you have just as good a chance of buying an America built car if you buy a Japanese brand - only you'll get substantially better quality and innovation, which is quite apparent in this case...
