Honda given a month to sell F1 team or close

LONDON (Reuters) - Honda have put their Formula One team up for sale and will close it down if no buyer is found by the end of the year, a senior source at a rival team told Reuters on Thursday.

"They have a month to find a buyer, otherwise they are closing the team," the source quoted Honda team bosses Ross Brawn and Nick Fry as telling a meeting of the Formula One Teams' Association (FOTA).

Global economic downturn = cut the expensive and unprofitable sections of corporations, such as funding F1. Heavy sponsorship is the only way to support such a ludicrously expensive sport. Perhaps it will be reborn again someday.

F1 should really get back to some basics. Make it a lot less expensive to do, maybe set spending limits for each company, limit power to a less-dangerous level so that people aren't getting killed like crazy when the R&D budgets aren't tens of millions of dollars.

Should be a way for it to still be a blast to watch, maybe even more so, without it being epic $$$ to do.

They're trying to with 2009. For instance the test mileage of cars is going to be reduced from 30,000km to 20,000 km. The new aero rules are supposed to massively decrease the wind tunnel and computing budgets too.
