Use the right tool for the right job.

Try this little experiment:
Get my kayak. It's a surf boat so it's only 8 feet long!
Fold down the seats in the Accord.
Stuff the kayak into the trunk, and be able close it!
Drive the car onto the beach. Surf all day.
Drag the kayak up through the sand.
Stuff the muddy kayak back into the trunk.
Get home, take the boat out.
Hose all the mud right out of the car.

As much as I love the new Accords, my boat will not fit all the way inside, and I wouldn't want to get mud all over the interior.

You could argue a holy war about whether or not it's ugly. The appeal lies in what you can do with it.

True but how many people actually kayak?! I'm amazed that SUV commercials show all this stuff you can do with their vehicle that less than 1 percent of the population participate in. Anyway, this guy isn't going within 1000 miles of a decent river since we live in a desert.

Well, you'd have to take that up with him :) Basically they designed a car that was supposed to appeal to a very specific demographic - male, early-to-mid 20s, outdoorsy (surfer, kayaker, moutain biker, camper). An additional demographic was college males (hence the frathouse-on-wheels advertising theme).

But even outside that demographic, it has a lot of handy uses. It's no worse than the average short-bed pickup, right?

Having the ability sure is nice. My mid-size SUV is parked in my driveway about 90% of the time now, but that's because I work from home and do nothing outdoors or have to go anywhere all day. But I bet you didn't know I went to school in Buffalo where I used the 4WD more often than not. The other week I went to Home Depot and stuck four 8x6 fences on the roof rack and 4 poles in the trunk area, while carrying 3 passengers. Of course people aren't going to do this every day or even 50% of the time. But the luxury is there, which is more than what I can say for a typical family car (which is parked behind my truck at the moment too).

You people are WAY too harsh on the Element, it does NOT look THAT bad.

Just think of it as a small van. The worst thing is the platic cladding. If that was gone, there wouldn't be anything wrong with it.
