My ac compressor has been messed up the past month or so. Well last night while driving it died and had smoke from the hood. I popped the hood and the belt that went to the compressor was messed up. It stopped a block from my house so I just pushed it home, did this potentially do any damage I may not be aware of?

Nah. Sounds like the compressor (or more likely the clutch) seized. Replace the clutch, buy a new belt and call it a day.

The failure of compressors on those CR-Vs is well known, said Andy Fiffick, the chairman of the board of the Mobile Air Conditioning Society. “There is definitely a problem out there,” he said
If you're not under warranty, you may want to research it a bit. Then, you may want to find an independent garage to confirm your diagnosis.

Best of luck,
Uno

"...a compressor should last the life of the car..."

My ass. I've never seen a car that didn't need work done to the compressor before 200K.

That said, 50-80K as reported in that article is definitely sub-par longevity and it does sound like they tend to go out in a particularly unfortunately manner.

Well it turned out to be an expensive repair. I used a local guy whom I trust, he is the owner and does most of the work himself with a helper. He had to take out the compressor and lines and flush the system out to get rid of all the metal shards, my condenser fan was also bad. $700

The price doesn't surprise me. AC servicing is cheap (I bought the tools and do it at myself anyway), but parts are expensive.

I've had 3 cars past 200K and none of them needed compressor work.

That's actually a good price for that much work. :)

What year is yours? My parents 2009 is having AC problems suddenly. Read about some of the older CRVs having very expensive repairs to fix common issues.

Not too bad all things considered. Assuming it's a K24 i4, the drive belt is also attached to the compressor.
