Note, the following is a comparison of Honda only to other japanese makes.

if you want quality, toyota has a much better history of quality.

if you want sporty vehicles, Nissan has a much better history of sporty vehicles.

if you want well designed vehicles, Mazda's have consistently had the more innovative design.

why was it that honda took off?

mostly because of mediocrity. their preludes have consistently been failures. the Minivan was a disaster untill the 2nd generation. they don't have the quality of toyotas, innovative design of mazda or the sportiness of Nissan.

boo honda.

HYPE.

the hype drives up the market value which in turn keeps resale value high.

i personally have never purchased a car for resale value, of course every car i've ever traded in had over 150k on it so wasn't much value left.

Exactly. Cars are the worst investment ever, so I don't usually base the purchase of my cars on how much I can sell them for...

How are they less reliable then Toyotas? I've loved my Accord...the main reason I didn't buy another one was Wrong Wheel Drive. Hell, they're finally putting the 6-speed V6 combo in the sedans next year.

At any rate, Toyotas are THE most boring cars made today.

boring is soooo relative. most people i know would call Hondas the boringest car ever, shoot they even managed to make the NSX boring. why do you think the prelude keeps dying, because it's BORING.

I don't know about that. The new 2005 models are simple but stately. :) I like them.

Maybe they don't have the history of quality that Toyota has, but they're still very reliable and arguably better looking than Toyotas. They're just another option for car buyers. It's not like everyone who prioritizes fuel economy or quality is going to buy a Toyota, so simplifying things down like that is pretty pointless.

One of the craziest posts I have seen.

Honda's have a definate position and a desirable product.

Toyota's ride like a parade float with extra body roll. Product target females and former Buick owners. Great resale, but not for me.

Nissan some great sportiness, but the designs inside/out are just not attractive to me. Only car I'd consider that is produced/owned by them is G35 Sport Sedan.

Mazda = Ford for a good portion of products and not in the same class.

Honda combines quality and reliability that has upstaged Detroit for decades, engineering innovation focused on sportiness/efficiency to their model range, with a interior/exterior treatment that ages well with time. All of these combine to create a great product.

Boo Toyota, Nissan, and Mazda.

Yep. IMO "resale value" is pointless to me. All that tells me is that I can't find that car for a good price to begin with, since they go for so much in the market.

Yes, Honda is overrated when you compare them to other Japanese brands.
But, try comparing Honda to American cars, then Honda teh god of automobiles.

I think that you answer your own question. People that want a well built, sporty and well engineered car buy Honda's. That is Honda's strength, they have been the best at combining three difficult factors.

Admittedly I am biased, being a Prelude owner, but I have a lot of fun driving my car, it is smooth, responsive, reliable and handles very well. It does not have the best straight line acceleration, but that is not the style of driving that interests me.
