I posted this first at
"PREAMBLE:While in search of a good power source for my folding farm and sump pump I reviewed a lot of sites. Based on cost and power requirements I wanted a 4.5 to 5KW electric generator. Most of the better ones ran $1,000 plus.

I went to Home Depot for one last look at their cheap B&S/Tecumseh powered units.
Lo and behold they had a place card for a "Coleman 6875 w/Honda engine" for $729.
A quick web search showed that this model was probably the "Coleman Powermate Honda 5500" branded for Home Depot. The similar generator was going for about $1700 on the web.
I almost bought 2."
Addendum -
It does lack some features of the Honda - cheaper gas tank, muffler, control panel and perhaps generator head. However it is solid enough to be identical to any of the other "Honda powered generators". I'm thinking of dropping a piece of plexiglass on top and making it a coffee table :)

COSTCO has coleman 5500 constant - 6875 max for $499 - not sure if this is the same but it looks basic but solid (five outlets 2x120, 2x220 1x220 30A) - has a tecumseh 11hp engine)

How noisy is your HD generator?

Home depot has the same with the cheap engine - a little research shows that the Honda engine is a premium.
