2009 Best Resale Value: Honda

Only two years removed from its last ?Best Brand? title in our annual Best Resale Value Awards, Honda has again taken top honors. The importance of quality is magnified in the eyes of a used car buyer, and Honda?s reputation for delivering well-built, reliable, dependable automobiles is well earned and well known. Fuel efficiency is another Honda hallmark, and another attribute likely to get greater attention from buyers seeking added value in the used car market. Sales leaders like the Accord and Civic might be the first vehicles that come to mind when thinking about Honda and resale values, but those industry stalwarts are backed by an entire fleet of vehicles that continually prove more resilient in regards to resale value than most?sometimes all?of their competitors.

let the hating begin

It's a good car but overhyped in resale, that's why it's so high. Resale is based in great part on conidence, it's certainly not something that can be immediately quantified.

Now, I grant easily that Hondas are probably the most reliable of all major brands, but I should note as an anecodotal and non-representative sample, my neighbor across the street bought a new Odyssey last year. She's been stranded on the road once already (required something like $16k in dealer repairs to get it back going) and at least one other time has been without her car for several days as it has gotten other major repairs. Terrible luck, but damn, that is not what somebody expects when buying a Honda!

Nothing in their lineup is compelling enough for me to buy. Besides as far as resale value is concerned, people could put an upside down H stamp on monkey turd and that'd sell too. It's all hype.

I'm not sure about that. Looking to trade in my 07 Fit Sport, that was $16,750 new, and I've got offers of $6k and $7k.

Honda is definitely an awesome brand for a basic vehicle but I personally find more of what I need in Ford so far and resale value personally means nothing to me as I run *every* vehicle I own into the ground.

It's quite interesting to see Scion tC on the Overall Top 10 list. I though it's one of the most riced cars this day, thus abused quite bad by owner.

Resale value isn't a plus when you're buying a used car though. Its nice if you want to buy a new car every two years.

Boring cars. I'd rather drive a Ford. Either get a slightly used one or they had crazy discounts where an 08 Fusion with 5MT was going for like 12K around here.

Hondas are overpriced for what they are. While they do have high reliability the difference between them and many other brands isn't as huge as it used to be and definitely doesn't make financial sense. I'd rather keep my vehicles that may cost a few hundred a year over what a Honda would to keep running than pay an extra $5000 up front. Especially because all their vehicles are valium on wheels. They have nothing in their lineup that is exciting. The S2000 is gone, their SUVs are cars with a higher roofline, and their cars are all boring. I don't count the civic SI as an actually sporty vehicle either. Toyota is in the same boat, they have a boring lineup.

If you're looking at japanese cars Nissan and Subaru are much better at making exciting vehicles. For the domestics every single one has taken more effort to get something different out there. Ford's new lineup is interesting, GM has a world class sports car that comes in a variety of levels (corvette) along with a top notch luxury/sports sedan (CTS), and even Chrysler has the Challenger and the wrangler which are both enthusiast vehicles.

Honda and Toyota are riding on success of the past decade and are still making the same type of car. Some people will always want a boring car that's just for transportation but many people won't. Their lack of innovation will come back to hurt them sooner or later.

Yeah, but a ricer is buying a ricer, so it doesn't matter

It kind of sucks that the car I want to get to replace mine down the road (a few years) is on that list (2008 CTS)

Honda (and Toyota for that matter) = Boring boring boring boring boring boring boring boring boring boring boring boring boring boring boring boring boring boring boring boring boring boring boring boring boring...

And did I say boring?

Lack of innovation? Uh, hybrid technology? Toyota and Honda are years ahead of everyone else in this area. When Toyota was committing billions to hybrid development GM and Ford took a pass, it was too risky..
Electronics, self-parking Lexus, etc.. Yeah, those japanese are way behind the times.

So you'd rather buy a car that is more sporty but a piece of shit? For the record, I've always been a VW owner and love driving them but after paying countless loads of money for repairs I said fuck it, and bought a Honda Element. Extremely reliable and I'm able to do just about anything in it. My Element is far from boring.

Anyone who complains that Hondas are boring simply hasn't driven the cars in that segment. Yeah, an Accord is boring compared to a 335i or an STi or a Corvette, but compared to a Camry, the Accord is like a Formula 1 car. People who lump the two together in that regard really show their ignorance.

Class for class, they tend to deliver cars that are biased very heavily towards driver satisfaction compared to their competitors. That they choose not to compete in certain classes doesn't make the rest of their cars somehow less fun.

And for the record, the 2009 S2000 is still for sale and will be for the remainder of the model year.

hondas have pretty much dominted in the compact car, midsized car, and compact SUV market with the civic, accord and cr-v for the past 5-8 years. the accord for about 15-20.

IF ITS SO DAMN BORING THEN EVERY WHY DO AMERICAN KEEP BUYING IT?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
for the record, i think its more boring waiting at the shop for GM/FORD to fix their broken cars.

the acura MDX and lexus RX300 have dominated the midsized SUV market since the MDX was introduced (2000's ish)

and wasn't the Honda Ridgeline TRUCK OF THE YEAR in 2006? how did ford and gm let this happen? i thought they were the bomb when it came to making trucks (which americans love) shouldn't they win truck of the year every year?

In Japan, an american car has never won "Japan Car of the Year" since the 1980 (and thats just when recording has begun)

And tell me, just how many import car companies(such as GM, Ford, Chrysler, etc) actually are on sale in Japan?? And i'm not talking about dealing through toyota or honda, but an actual branded dealership of their own.

I'd hate to call Ford behind on hybrid, their new GenII hybrid system is at minimum more technologically advanced then what Toyota has at the moment. They had something like 119 new patents on their Ford Fusion Hybrid/Gen II hybrid engine And for the record they aren't 'using' toyotas hybrid system, this new GenII was developed in house

I have a BMW 135i on order. Nothing from Honda or Toyota even comes close. Until they start innovating and producing cars that are not boring and generic, they will not be worthy of my consideration.

I was referring to innovation that made cars actually exciting to drive. Read the whole post, I never mentioned anything more than cars being interesting and fun or them being boring. Toyota and honda make cars (at least the ones they sell in the US) simply for transportation. If you want to get from point A to point B they work well. However if you actually want to enjoy looking at your car or have a fun time driving there are better options.

Americans have not been kind to the domestic car companies when they tried innovation. GM had the balls to try a production electric vehicle. They fielded the EV1. It worked ok but not well enough at the time (technology has changed, much more feasible now) so they scrapped it. They got crucified by the press for having the balls to take a risk.

The fact of the matter is not just "some" people want boring reliable cars, MOST people want boring reliable cars. That is the largest segment, not people who buy a corvette or whatever.

If the Accord is like a Formula car compared to the Camry, then the Ford Fusion must be a rocket ship compared to the Accord.

Have fun with the repair and maintenance costs on that.

I do love German vehicles though. Blast to drive.

Best resale value, I'd go along with that no problem, reliable cars, same. Where domestics shine is you can get a LOT more bang for the buck at initial purchase, with Honda not much wiggle room on price..
