The physical acts are indeed a choice. Someone can be homosexual and choose not to engage in homosexual acts.

What controls the thoughts (I believe) is a combination of genetic and envrironmental factors.

the theory i've heard is that it can be an advantage in small numbers. child rearing is a very energy resource expensive task, esp burdensome back in the precivilized past. having a small % of your people able to contribute to your tribes hunting/gathering without the burden of their own children increases yields for all. as having a small % of your men being color blind helps a hunting group spot camoflaged animals. some left handers probably help protect you in tribal warfare too. its too easy to think of existence like it is now, where our technology allows us to multiply without bounds. withotu technology the carrying capacity of the land is far less. no advanced transport limits your water and food resources to just what exists within easy reach.
