Here's one reasoning that I've heard, and one that I think Optimus on this board follows -

Homosexuality is bad because it sex outside of a marriage. Since most religions don't allow same sex marriages, no homosexual relationships are recognized as valid by many churches/religions.

That's not really the RC position. Homosexuality is a sin. It is a sin even within a "loving relationship". The Church recognizes it as sinful and says that this is part of the state of humankind. Thus, with the help of the Church, the mediators, Christ, one can overcome sin and be close to God. Homosexual tendencies by themselves are there, they are a part of being human and one must look to God for redemption. Acting on those tendencies is sinful.

Now it sort of begs the question why they are such sticklers on same sex marriage and I think that goes back to the Sodom and Gomorrah and the whole hubaloo surrounding that.

Well, the actual passages have been quoted here. The immoral and adulterers shall not inherit the Kingdom of God and so the Church recognizes homosexuality as something that detracts from that but this is not to say that it judges or does not say there is Salvation.

hasn't this issue been covered before on OT?

Cheers ! :)

<< I don't want anyone to think that homosexuals are any more "sinful" or "guilty" than heterosexuals.
On a continual basis, I pervert sexuality as much or if not more than homosexuals. We all distort God's perfect ideals for sex into something perverse and unfulfilling.

You nailed it, man (no pun intended!). That is the one thing many Christians don't seem to want to accept. Their gay neighbor is just as sinful as they are. There is no quantification of sin. One sin, 200 sins... no difference.

That is the biggest problem I have with some Christians... they use the bible to justify their hatred of homosexuals. It's like they missed the whole part in the bible (inarguably THE most important part) when Jesus says to love your neighbor, faith hope and love are the important things, greatest of which is love, etc. etc. etc.

Yet people will simply gloss right past your post and not examine themselves and how they treat people. It's really sad, actually.

Leviticus Chap 18, King James Version

22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is babomination.

23 Neither shalt thou lie with any beast to defile thyself therewith: neither shall any woman stand before a beast to lie down thereto: it is confusion.

It's so easy to laugh
It's so easy to hate
It takes strength to be gentle and kind

I "love" the bible quoters...spewing out translated verses like a smoke stack spews out pollution.

If you're not repentent from sin then there definitely is a difference.

I think anyone should be treated with basic respect. However I also believe that we shouldn't just throw our hands in the air in vague indifference and argue that there is no distinction between those who make no effort to repent of their sins.

<< ChristianAnswers.net does a fairly good job explaining this. While I don't agree with them on everything they've got, this seems pretty good after skimming through it. >>
