Homeworld: Shipbreakers

Elixer

Hmm, so, GearBox basically funds this game that was under development by X Relic guys (who did make the old Homewold game).

However...
"Hardware and Homeworld inevitably share much of the same DNA, and that's a good thing," Blackbird CEO Rob Cunningham said at the time. "Homeworld was a fantastic game and we want to recapture that. But what we're offering with Hardware is really a different kind of RTS experience that isn't found in Homeworld or any other RTS."
If it ain't broke, don't fix it don't apply I guess... I have no idea what the above could mean...

They're still releasing the graphically updated 1 and 2, the gameplay should be preserved with those. That's all I really care about, if the new IP is good as well, that's great, if not, I wasn't really expecting anything anyways.

They're not touching the game, they're letting Blackbird Interactive control development, and they're providing additional capital as well as support. Ship Breakers was ALWAYS going to be different from Homeworld...not sure what you were expecting?

Still have 1&2 being remade in HD, so you're still going to have the core gameplay from those intact.

Honestly, I was very pleasantly surprised with this announcement from Gearbox. :awe:

OP, thanks for posting this. i am VERY interested like I haven't been since 1999.

Things are looking up for all things Homeworld but the dark spectre of Gearbox and F2P still loom over the IP. Whether they'll be a force for good or evil remains to be seen.

I really hope they are also able to do a remake of Homeworld:Catacylsm. I really liked the fact that all of your ships were important the whole game. Also, I think it had one of the best stories or the series.

Not anymore. At least not if the info in OPs link is correct: "The game will now be titled Homeworld: Shipbreakers as part of a deal signed by Gearbox"

I stand (sit?) corrected. My brain wasn't fully functional after a full LONG weekend dealing with kids.

Pretty sure the answer is no.

First problem is that Cataclysm was not made by Relic but by Barking Dog Studios so there seem to be a few legal issues. The second and most important problem is that the source code is simply gone.

Barking Dog Studios no longer exists and no one that can be found kept anything regarding the work they did on homeworld so Gearbox would have nothing but community modding tools to work with if they ever did get the rights.

-edit-
F2P rant removed, see my next post

I don't really have a high opinion for Gearbox. I know Borderlands 1/2 on the whole isn't supposed to be taken seriously but even the attempted humor with pop-culture memes all over the place strikes me as infantile crap. It's going to be a disaster with Homeworld that demands a serious approach to the narrative.

Ground-based RTS that looks like it would retcon some serious lore from the original Homeworld? Excellent!

Very nice trailer, I would love a on-world RTS that is innovative and grand in scale.

What a time to be a PC gamer, all the awesome genres like cRPGs, RTS, Spacesims are making a come back!!

They had said in an interview that Cataclysm was impossible because some of the original assets were accidentally discarded by its developer. There is no way for them to remaster it from unless they redo it from scratch and that isn't going to happen.

I wish I could tell Steam to take back Homeworld remastered and give me money back. I didn't make it past the fourth mission, because it was an ENTIRELY different game and BORING.

Borderlands is a second-rate attempt at what should be gaming canon. Diablo 2 + FPS... does NO developer/publisher get this? Take whatever you think would be cool and stuff it up your ass, and make a true FPS/Diablo hybrid. If I only won the lottery...

So... not impressed and NOT interested. They can't even get a classic right, but we're supposed to be hyped on their take on a new one? Not me. Space PC games are dead. X can't get it right, Stardock continues to put out rehashes and rubbish, the Alpha Centauri remake has been officially but not spiritually done, and all we see are sub-par 4x games (so many) and sub-par real time space games.

Modern gaming studios cannot make classics, and cannot re-make classics for a new generation. It's been proven imo.

Come on PC gamers, hype!

RTS is making a come back in style!

This ticks all my boxes:

Dune 2 desert world setting, massive land-carriers (Gundam Universe), Some very talented devs behind the helm...
