It is getting to be Spring here, and I am having an infestation of weeds and crap in my yard. What sort of sprayer do I need, what kind of spray do I need, what kind of fertilizer do I need etc. I've never maintained a yard before. Any help and basic tips would be appreciated.

Spreader is the pushcart fertilizer thing right? I just get the pellets and use the spreader? This is sod, so would sprays work better? Total lawn noob here, just wondering what I can do. I really hate to get Chemlawn to come out and do it.

Stop by a local nursery. I don't mean Home Depot or Target, a real nursery. Explain your situation to them and they will tell you exactly what you need for your area.

Use a broadcast spreader to feed, and hose end sprayer for weed killer. Feed is cheap. Weed killer is expensive. If you can apply a weed killer with the broadcast spreader while the grass is damp, and won't rain for 48 hours, that's ideal. It's one of the cheapest, and easiest ways to do it, but it's hard to meet those conditions. The weed killer has to stick to the weed's leaves to work, and not wash off before it's absorbed. A hose end sprayer is easier, but more wasteful. A pump sprayer is very good for spot applications, and therefore the cheapest way to go, but takes longer.

The time to act is early. Once things get too far, you will have huge fight on your hands like you won't believe.
