Search for APS parking Nazi and Dolly Man to see why HOA isn't a good thing.

Thread cliffs:

Some people like to be told how to live their lives and what to do. And, they want the people around them to live their lives the same way. HOAs are perfect for those folks.

Others like some independence, like to make their own decisions.
They realize that people who live in HOAs typically aren't your "down to earth" type of people. They probably realize that you'll have to take the bad with the good, but would rather have a real neighborhood.

On a side note: have been designing another barn. Just discovered that I do NOT need a building permit for any agricultural buildings. So, plumbing, electric, structural, etc. - no inspections, no building permit, no increase in taxes. (Just a small barn; more like a huge shed - 20' x 30'.) Of course, as opportunity knocks, it may grow larger. Guy who delivers my hay said wait til the lumber auction in the fall or spring - he picked up 4000 board feet of lumber quite cheaply to build his new barn.
Where do you live to have such luxury?

Around here any structural that is greater than 100 sqf ie. 10'x10' require permits.

Wasn't "agricultural buildings" a fairly good hint? I would guess "rural" or "unincorporated".

No. HOAs are for people who have already decided to live a certain way and want to live among people who live the same way. People who live in HOAs don't need to "be told how to live their lives," they've already decided how they're going to do that.

Same thing, just a different angle. If everybody really willingly lived the same way, there would be no need for rules. The rules are, in fact, "telling people how to live their lives".

except the people are choosing these rules to live under.

That other poster that can do whatever he wants without permit lives in a fucking cowtown. Rural places have nothing to do with this thread IMHO.

I'm not choosing these rules to live under. The fact that they have to give out fines means that other people don't agree with or don't care about the rules. The fact that rules exist means people break them. There is no denying that the rules are, in fact, telling others how to live.

Just depends on your perspective; which side of the fence you're on.

now you are just hashing words.

In an HOA people choose the rules and the fines for breaking those rules they will fall under. It's telling themselves how they will live and how those around them will live.

This same homeowner then left restaurant appliances from their failed business in their backyard as if his yard were a public storage facility.

You mean he left appliances in his back yard as if it were a private storage facility? Which it is, IMO, because it's his damn back yard. If I had a busy-body like you as my neighbour, I would probably murder you.

This, especially the murder part.
