Homeless man left to die after saving woman from attack

This is disgusting. The man saves a woman from being attacked by someone with a knife, he chases down the guy away from the woman and in the process gets stabbed , falls on the sidewalk and nobody helps him. Over 25 people walk by, even taking cell phone pictures of him and one guy rolls him over, sees the blood on the sidewalk and walks off.

I know there is no law about having to help someone in trouble. But damn people call 911 and hang up, you don't have to get involved. This man died trying to help someone and the public ignored him like a piece of trash.

Security video at the site showing people ignoring him.

A heroic homeless man, stabbed after saving a Queens woman from a knife-wielding attacker, lay dying in a pool of blood for more than an hour as nearly 25 people indifferently strolled past him, a shocking surveillance video obtained by The Post reveals.

Some of the passers-by paused to stare at Hugo Alfredo Tale-Yax last Sunday morning and others leaned down to look at his face.

He had jumped to the aid of a woman attacked on 144th Street at 88th Road in Jamaica at 5:40 a.m., was stabbed several times in the chest and collapsed as he chased his assailant.

In the wake of the bloodshed, a man came out of a nearby building and chillingly took a cellphone photo of the victim before leaving. And in several instances, pairs of people gawked at Tale-Yax without doing anything.

Later, another man stopped, leaned over and vigorously shook Tale-Yax’s body. After lifting the victim’s head and body to reveal a pool of blood, he also walked off.

Not until some 15 minutes after he was shaken by the pedestrian — more than an hour and 20 minutes after the victim collapsed — did firefighters finally arrive and discover that Tale-Yax, 31, had died.

Firefighters were responding to a 911 call of a non-life-threatening injury at 7:23 a.m. when they found his body.

Cops said they received four 911 calls at around the time of the attack reporting a woman screaming, but found nothing. They received no other 911 calls.

yea was on the news last night, really sad. someone even stopped and took a pic of him with their cellphone and walked off

you cant be sued for calling 911 and telling them theres someone bleeding on the sidewalk unconscious at XXXXX. thats literally all that needed to happen

No. I think it's more that ppl don't want to deal with the hassle of waiting there for cops, talking to them, taking time off their schedule etc. Why take time off from your precious day when you can just ignore the problem and keep moving? Sad as hell but true.

Hierarchy of importance in help:

Little white girls -> Girls -> Women ---------> Boys -> Men ----------------> Illegal Immigrants ------------------------> Homeless people

You don't have to wait. All you have to do is call 911 and hang up.

what if u mistakenly dial 611 and reach tmobile customer service instead? can the rep sue u for undue stress and trauma? pfffft

Hey who gives a shit? People get killed all the time. So why should I worry about him? No one would stop to save me either so screw em. I've got to get to work and I don't want to catch hell for being late. Let someone else take care of this POS if someone thinks he's worth it. *

*My take on the mentality of people (not) involved.

We are a self absorbed and perverse society.

Yes you lot are. I hope to think that in Australia it would be different.

There would be less chance of the original attack occurring.

you dont have to wait around, you simply need to call and tell them, they will most likely ask for your name and might contact you later but thats about it, you never have to get involved besides making a phone call

take a look at the video. the guy looks like any other homeless man sleeping on the street. the average city worker probably walks past half a dozen on their daily commute. if they stopped to make sure every single one was ok, they'd never get from point A to point B... his wounds were hidden and there was no blood in sight.

not to mention the sheer safety factor. I read a story about a girl who walked past a homeless guy in a wheel chair trying to reach a newspaper on the ground. she walked over, offered to help, and while she was bending over picking up the out of reach newspaper for him, he jumped out of his wheelchair and snatched her purse.

the kid who took a picture is kind of a douche and I can blame the woman who he saved, but I can't really blame everyone else for just walking down a poorly-lit street.

NO NO NO NO. You couldn't be more wrong. It's violent video games and movies. They've desensitized us all into uncaring douchebags. It's true I tell you!

If you called the police every time you came across a body you wouldn't get anything else done.

In all seriousness though, in a lot of these neighborhoods there is an inherent distrust for the police and getting involved with police not only for fear of being labeled a "snitch" but historically there has been cases where you have done the right thing and next you know you are a "person of interest" in an unsolved homicide.

Maybe it is just a New York thing but I never saw a "homeless" guy laying on the street like that when I worked in DC and I used to pass plenty of them to and from work. I've seen them sacked out on boxes or newspapers with their few possessions gathered around them but never just sprawled out comatose on the bare pavement. If I had seen any of them laying the way that guy was laying I would have stopped to check, it is the right and decent thing to do. The callous disregard the passers by showed that man makes me sick.

Yep. The police are not there to help. They are there to find anyone to blame.

That's what Individualism does to you.

Funny thing, this weekend. I went out to Lunch with my family to a big chain seafood restaurant, and of course, they tried to order dishes "to share" amongst everyone. I tried to get the waitress to understand, and she was very patient. But you can tell a lot based on even food ordering on the fragmentation of people amongst cultures.
