Homegroup problems with Win7

I have just built a HTPC but can’t get it to participate in a Homegroup (HG). It won’t join an existing HG or if I delete that and create a new HG with the HTPC the other 2 PCs can’t join it.
My laptop can happily join a HG that my desktop created.
All 3 systems are running Windows 7 Pro x64 SP1 are fully patched and using MS Security Essentials & MS Firewall only.
I can ping the HTPC and it can see be seen by the HG setup utility so it’s not blind to the network.
I’ve run the trouble-shooter multiple times on both the HTPC and desktop with no luck. I’ve run out of things to try now.
Help please!

Thanks for the links. They cover the basics and obvious things but none of that helped. I did find another link that was helpful but it still hasn’t solved the issue:

Looks like I’ll revert to manually configuring the network.
Not impressed with Homegroups as remember having problems setting one up for my parents also.
Had less problems with manual networking so I’ll revert to that.

Are all your computer network connection set to HOME?
Turn off the firewall and see.

Everything is set to Home. The trouble-shooter picks up basics things like that from past experience.
I’ll try disabling the Firewall but that’s not a long term solution of course. 🙂

I had the same problem when trying to get my HTPC to join the existing Homegroup. Tried everything everyone has posted. I had created the Homegroup with my desktop and had no problems with my netbook and laptop joining. No go with the HTPC, same OS on all.
I finally started from scratch and tried creating the Homegroup with each computer with new passwords. It was probably just luck, but only by creating the Homegroup with the laptop was I able to get all computers joined.

@ MadScientist. Thanks for that. I have tried creating the HG on different PCs with no joy. I haven’t tried using my laptop to create the HG yet so maybe I’ll give that a go. I’m building a new desktop very soon so I’ll probably wait until I can use that to create it and see how that works.
