Well the last of my brew was consumed at a get together over the weekend. I didn't mean to run out, but I've not had the time lately to brew.

Well I had the time on Sunday so I brewed two batches.

Oatmeal Stout (10 GALLON recipe)
#2 oatmeal
#3 maris otter
#1 chocolate malt
#15 LME Amber
1 ounce Magnum @ 90 minutes
2 ounce K Goldings @ 15 minutes
Wyeast Irish Ale yeast 1084

Forgot to take a gravity reading.

Homegrown Pale Ale (5 gallons)

All grain....I wrote them down, but I don't remember them. Bunch of Pale Malt, Marris Otter and some crystal.
single rest at 155, sparge at 165
1 ounce Magnum
1/2 quart of freshly picked Cascade hops at 10 minutes
1/2 quart of freshly picked Cascade hops at 3 minutes
OG 1.050

Little Beer (3 gallons - second runnings from the Pale Ale
Some grain
some cascades
some yeast.
OG 1.040

I had two kettles going and it took a while for me to finish, and I might be in for a surprise with the beer that has my homegrown hops in it.

How hard is it to grow your own hops? How much space do you need to actually grow enough to be useful? And how hardy are they?

i spent 75$ and made 7 cases of good stuff (well, should be good)

Natural Ice, Schmidt, and Milwaukee's Best 30 packs can be had for $11 each. You pay $0.45 per beer while a more conservative drinker pays $0.37 per beer.

but I find the flavor of those beers to be pretty poor. no hops, no body, nothing but carbonation and slight malt.

I can purchase a car for a couple hundred bucks, but that doesn't make it a good buy. :p

Yeah but all of those beers suck. I'm sure HomeBrewerDude makes some tasty beer.

It's very easy. You don't need that much space either. They do pretty good as long as you keep them watered. I've been growing for two years now and my Cascade plant is enormous.

Gave mine a shot this year but the Texas sun was just a bit too much for the Cascade and Northern brewer. They got a little toasty around the first of July. I have a friend who grew some Hersbrucker and just harvested most of his. Got around 5 lbs from a 3rd year plant, so i'll see what I can come up with this weekend for it.

Just wanted to post an update on a new yeast i've started using. Austin hombrew finally got some of the US-56 in. I'm loving it. Tired of dealing with my yeast ranch all the time and having to step up from plates. I used 1056 quite a bit and this is a pretty close approximation of it in dry form. Just kegged 20gallons last night that I had used in a APA.

Went from 1.065 to 1.011 in 12 days. Didn't even bother going to a secondary with this batch. Crystal clear and this yeast makes a a nice firm trub cake that didn't even stir much when I hit it with my racking cane. Dropped 2 cornies in my chest freezer and held 2 back to see how much better this may get with a bit more time.

We'll see tonight how it turns out.

It came out great. Like clearing for not using a secondary. Pretty much identical to using 1056. I actually pulled a pint of this same recipe using the 1056 to compare with this and they were just about the same to me. The older had a little reduction in hop aroma due to being about 3 months old but I think I may be dropping 1056 from my stash now that I have a good dry yeast in its stead.

that is good to know. I have heard about this yeast here or there, but you're starting to sell me on it (at least to try). I really like the 1056 and it would be good to have a dry yeast for storage and emergencies.

Both of these beers are really good, though they are too dark to be considered Pale Ales...
